USS John S. McCain: A Year of Pacific Operations and Fleet Week Participation

The USS John S. McCain (DDG 56), an Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer of the United States Navy, has been actively engaged in numerous operations and exercises throughout the Pacific region. From multinational drills to fleet week celebrations, this warship has demonstrated its commitment to maintaining a free and open Indo-Pacific.

In October 2021, the USS John S. McCain played a part in the 40th Annual San Francisco Fleet Week. This event, kicking off on October 4th, brought together the San Francisco community with Marines, Coast Guardsmen, and Sailors. San Francisco Fleet Week is an annual public event that honors the contributions of the sea services. It provides an opportunity for the public to meet and interact with service members, view ship tours, and witness aerial demonstrations.

Earlier in the year, in March 2021, the USS John S. McCain participated in a multinational exercise alongside the French and Japanese navies in the Philippine Sea. This exercise highlighted the strong alliances and interoperability between the three nations, working together to promote maritime security and regional stability.

Prior to this, in October 2020, the USS John S. McCain was involved in trilateral naval exercises in the South China Sea with the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) and the Royal Australian Navy (RAN). These exercises marked the fifth time in 2020 that these three key allies had operated together in the U.S. 7th Fleet area of operations, underscoring their combined commitment to the region.

The USS John S. McCain has been an integral part of the Ronald Reagan Carrier Strike Group, further demonstrating its role in maintaining a strong naval presence in the Indo-Pacific. Its operations are vital for ensuring freedom of navigation and promoting a rules-based international order in this critical region.

After undergoing necessary repairs in Yokosuka, Japan, the USS John S. McCain returned to operational readiness. This Arleigh Burke-class destroyer continues to be a crucial asset for the U.S. Navy, projecting power and fostering partnerships across the Pacific.
