From Apples to Agritainment: The Story of Uncle John’s

In the early 1970s, John and Carolyn Beck embarked on their journey as the new owners of the “family farm,” purchased from John’s parents. Initially operating as a wholesale fruit and vegetable farm, the young Becks faced the harsh realities of a struggling wholesale market. To sustain their beloved farm, they knew they needed a fresh approach. That’s when inspiration struck: apple cider and donuts. Despite initial skepticism from John’s parents, the determined couple moved forward, transforming their barn into what would become a cider mill.

Family played a crucial role in bringing this vision to life. As relatives pitched in, helping with the barn conversion and the new venture, the phrase “Uncle John, what do you want me to do…?” became a common refrain. It was this constant calling for “Uncle John” that organically gave birth to the name – Uncle John’s Cider Mill, a moniker that perfectly captured the family-centric atmosphere.

Through unwavering dedication and a strong belief in their endeavor, Uncle John’s Cider Mill began to flourish. Building upon the success of their cider and donuts, they expanded their offerings to include homemade pies, breads, preserves, honeys, and syrups. To enhance the fall experience, weekend entertainment was introduced in the late 1970s, evolving into festive events. The farm further transformed, with barns repurposed into a Cider Mill, Bakery, Gift Shop, and even a Taproom. John and Carolyn’s innovative spirit and hard work have since established them as respected pioneers in the “Agritainment” industry.

Even in retirement, “Uncle John,” as he is affectionately known, remains deeply connected to the farm. While his family encourages him to take it easy, John Beck can still be found actively involved, whether he’s fixing equipment, running errands, hauling apples, chatting with customers, sampling bakery creations, or, most importantly, spending cherished moments with Carolyn and their family.

As Uncle John himself puts it, “After growing my business for the last 40 years, it gets in your blood, it is hard to walk away.” This enduring passion encapsulates the heart of Uncle John’s, a place rooted in family, tradition, and a love for the land.
