St. John’s Recreation Center: Rules and Regulations for Facility Use

Ensuring a safe, enjoyable, and respectful environment for everyone is the primary goal at St. John’s Recreation Center. To facilitate this, it’s important that all patrons understand and adhere to the following rules and regulations while utilizing the recreation facilities. These guidelines are in place to ensure the well-being of all members and the proper maintenance of the facilities.

Access and Admission Requirements

To gain entry into any of the St. John’s Recreation Center facilities, a valid St. Johns University ID card* is mandatory. This policy ensures that the facilities are exclusively available for St. John’s University community members. Please note that guests are not permitted to use the recreation facilities. Always carry your ID card with you, as you will be required to present it upon request by any university faculty or staff member. Failure to do so is considered a violation of the university’s code of conduct and may result in disciplinary action as outlined in the Student Handbook.

Conduct and Prohibited Items

Maintaining a healthy and respectful atmosphere is paramount within the recreation center. Therefore, the use of alcohol and drugs is strictly prohibited in all recreation facilities. Similarly, smoking is not allowed within Carnesecca Hall or on any of the recreational fields. For security and safety reasons, personal belongings such as clothes or book bags are not permitted to be left unattended in the gym or hallways. Locker rooms and mini lockers are available for securing your belongings while you enjoy the facilities. In case of any lost or found items, please bring them to the attention of Campus Recreation or Public Safety immediately for assistance.

Attire and Facility Usage Guidelines

Proper athletic attire is required at all times when using any recreation facility. This is crucial for hygiene, safety, and to maintain the quality of the equipment and facilities. Acceptable attire includes sweatpants, jogging suits, gym shorts, t-shirts, or sweatshirts, and sneakers. Failure to wear appropriate athletic attire may result in dismissal from the facility. When attending events or observing activities in the main gym as a spectator, please be aware that shoes, boots, or jeans are not permitted on the main gym floor. Spectators are welcome to observe from the designated bleacher areas. During Campus Recreation contests and events, access to the gym floor is restricted to participants only. This is to ensure the safety of participants and to avoid any interruptions during gameplay. This rule applies during active play, time-outs, and breaks between halves. For outdoor fields, appropriate footwear is also necessary. Sneakers or rubber-soled cleats are permitted, but metal cleats are strictly prohibited to protect the field surfaces. To maintain cleanliness and prevent damage, food and beverages, with the exception of water, are not allowed in any recreation facility or on any recreational field.

Safety, Security, and Reporting

The safety and security of all users are of utmost importance. All recreational facilities are supervised and managed by building managers, Public Safety, and Campus Recreation personnel. Any individual found within the premises without a valid St. John’s University ID card will be removed from campus. Stealing or any form of theft will not be tolerated and will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law. We encourage everyone to be vigilant and report any instances of illegal or criminal activities, such as stealing or looting, to Campus Recreation and Public Safety immediately. Your cooperation is essential in keeping our facilities safe and secure for everyone. In the event of any accidents or injuries, it is imperative to report them to Campus Recreation staff immediately. Campus Recreation will then coordinate with Student Health Services and Public Safety to provide necessary assistance and support.

By adhering to these rules and regulations, you contribute to making St. John’s Recreation Center a positive and healthy environment for the entire university community. We encourage everyone to enjoy the facilities responsibly and respectfully.
