Every day, curious travelers and Outer Banks enthusiasts ask: Who exactly was John Yancey? The answer unveils a fascinating story behind one of Kill Devil Hills’ most beloved oceanfront hotels, the John Yancey Oceanfront Inn. John Yancey was indeed a real person, a visionary hotelier from Newport News, Virginia, whose name became synonymous with hospitality in the Hampton Roads area. The John Yancey Inn in Kill Devil Hills marked the beginning of his family’s successful venture into the hotel industry.
For those familiar with our inn, the Main Building holds a special significance. This was the original structure, established in 1962, laying the foundation for what John Yancey Oceanfront Inn is today. Later, the Sea Building emerged, positioned directly in front of the Main Building, expanding the inn’s capacity and oceanfront access. Interestingly, many long-time visitors remember a time when the John Yancey Inn also housed a full-service restaurant, located within what are now the Easy-Beach Access rooms. The early 1980s saw further expansion with the addition of the Four Seasons building, solidifying the inn’s presence in Kill Devil Hills.
In 2003, a new chapter began for the John Yancey Inn. The Yancey family decided to sell the Kill Devil Hills hotel property. A family investment group purchased the inn, just before the centennial celebration of the Wright Brothers’ First Flight, an event deeply intertwined with the history of the Outer Banks. The current owners, who also manage other properties in the Outer Banks, view the John Yancey Oceanfront Inn as a long-term investment and a vital part of the Kill Devil Hills community.
Crucially, the new ownership chose to retain the name “John Yancey Inn,” recognizing the strong local connection and historical value it held. As one of the owners, Jeff, explained, “Many past guests and locals had such fond memories from childhood and growing up going to ‘The Yancey’.” This affectionate nickname, “The Yancey,” spoke volumes about the inn’s place in the hearts of generations of visitors and Outer Banks residents. Continuing the John Yancey legacy was a decision embraced by both the new owners and the Yancey family.
Jeff further elaborated on the decision to operate as an independent hotel. “When we purchased the hotel, it had a franchise attached – Quality Inn – but we discovered early on in our ownership that we, and our repeat guests, preferred the flexibility of being a fully independent hotel.” This independence has allowed the John Yancey Oceanfront Inn to prioritize reinvestments in property upgrades and guest room renovations, responding directly to guest feedback and needs, rather than adhering to rigid corporate mandates.
While the John Yancey Oceanfront Inn has evolved over the years, the fundamental layout of the buildings remains a testament to its original design. Every room has undergone renovations, the dune deck has been rebuilt, the pool area upgraded, and a welcoming picnic area added. These improvements are all part of the ongoing commitment to uphold the Yancey legacy of exceptional customer service, creating inviting coastal-inspired accommodations, and providing family-friendly amenities, all while offering an unbeatable beachfront location on the Outer Banks.
Looking ahead, the John Yancey Oceanfront Inn in Kill Devil Hills is focused on continuous improvement. The final phase of room renovations in the Main Building is slated for completion in the upcoming off-season of 2022-2023. Beyond that, exciting plans are in development for further enhancements to the property, grounds, and amenities, all aimed at elevating the guest experience. Have you noticed the fresh, new logo? It’s prominently featured online and on the brand new sign at the front of the property, representing the inn’s modern approach while honoring its rich history.
A refresh of the Four Seasons building is anticipated to begin around 2024. The John Yancey Oceanfront Inn values guest input and welcomes suggestions and recommendations as it continues to refine and enhance this iconic Kill Devil Hills destination for future generations.
