Born on June 20, 1964, in Pequannock, NJ, John Whitehead dedicated his life to his community and his family, leaving behind a legacy of hard work, dedication, and love. His contributions to Kinnelon and the Public Works Department, along with his unwavering commitment to his loved ones, will be deeply remembered by all who knew him.
John Whitehead’s career with the Kinnelon Department of Public Works spanned over 38 years, a testament to his deep-rooted commitment to his hometown. Starting from the ground up, John’s reliability and leadership qualities quickly became apparent. He rose through the ranks, becoming foreman in 2003 and then superintendent in 2006. His exceptional service and professionalism were recognized in 2024 when John Whitehead received the prestigious American Public Works Association award. This accolade highlighted his outstanding contributions and unwavering commitment to maintaining and improving the Kinnelon community. Beyond his professional achievements, John was known for his quiet humility, his readiness to assist others, and his genuine kindness, making him a respected figure within the department and the wider Kinnelon area.
Family was at the heart of John Whitehead’s life. He was a devoted father to his daughter, Chelsea Whitehead, and his son, Kyle Whitehead, providing them with steadfast support and embodying the true essence of a family man. Outside of work and family, John found solace and joy in the natural world. He was an avid outdoorsman, with a passion for hunting, fishing, and relaxing trips to the beach. These hobbies provided him with cherished moments of peace and exploration, reflecting his appreciation for life’s simple pleasures.
John Whitehead is survived by his daughter Chelsea, his son Kyle, his brother James Whitehead (Dawn), his sisters Wanda Speziale and Bonnie Jean Gallopo (Mike), along with numerous nephews, nieces, cousins, friends, and his faithful canine companions, Jerzy and Sara. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Nicole, his mother, Helen (Van Zile) Whitehead, and his father, John Whitehead Sr. While the absence of John Whitehead will be profoundly felt by his family and friends, his spirit of dedication and love will continue to inspire and resonate with all who were fortunate enough to know him.
A celebration of John Whitehead’s life will be held on Saturday, January 11th, 2025, from 12pm to 2pm at the Morrison Etheridge Funeral Home, located at 86 Bartholdi Ave., Butler, NJ. In remembering John Whitehead, we honor a man who exemplified hard work, community service, and family devotion. His legacy will live on through the countless lives he touched and the community he diligently served.
