His passing, due to complications from septic shock, occurred in the ICU at Columbia St. Mary’s Hospital in Milwaukee. John Vernon Maug’s life was marked by unwavering dedication to his family, his country, and a deep appreciation for the natural world.

Born on November 15, 1944, John Vernon lived a life full of purpose and love. He is survived by his devoted wife, Mary Maug, who stood by his side throughout their journey together. His legacy continues through his children: Amy (Jeremy) Halcomb, Kevin Maug, and Jill (Matt) Baker. John Vernon’s joy was amplified by his role as a proud grandfather to Grace, Abby, Liam, Stephen, Eileen, Elizabeth, and Gus. He also leaves behind his cherished siblings Maurine, Barb (Tom), Kathy (Bruce), and Jim, along with numerous other relatives and friends who will deeply miss his presence.
John Vernon Maug’s character was defined by his love for those around him and his patriotic spirit. He found immense pleasure in the outdoors, indulging in hunting pursuits that ranged from deer and ducks to pheasants, and even the squirrels that challenged his gardening efforts. His adventurous spirit extended to travel, allowing him to explore diverse corners of the globe throughout his life.
Beyond his personal passions, John Vernon Maug dedicated his professional life to serving others. He retired from a fulfilling career in Human Resources, where he likely applied his skills in leadership and interpersonal relations. Adding to his commitment to service, John Vernon also retired as an Army Colonel, having devoted many years to the United States military. His military service is a testament to his discipline, leadership, and profound commitment to his country.

However, above all accomplishments and interests, John Vernon Maug’s greatest love was his family and friends. He treasured the time spent with them, sharing his distinctive sense of humor, captivating stories drawn from his rich life experiences, and his famously delicious potato salad, a staple at gatherings.
Even during his challenging two-week stay in the hospital, John Vernon Maug’s spirit remained strong. He remained alert and found comfort in the precious moments of fellowship with his family at his bedside. His faith provided him with strength and peace as he faced his passing, secure in the knowledge that he would be welcomed into the presence of his Savior, Jesus Christ.
Friends and family are invited to pay their respects during a visitation at St. Monica Catholic Church, located at 5681 N Santa Monica Blvd, Whitefish Bay, WI 53217, on Thursday, December 22, from 9:00 AM to 10:45 AM. A eulogy honoring John Vernon Maug’s life will commence at 10:45 AM, followed immediately by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 AM. A reception in Donovan Hall at the church will follow the Mass. Interment will be private.
