John A. Tudor, a beloved figure in Minnesota soccer and devoted family man, passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 9th, at 6 p.m. in Minnetonka, Minnesota, at the age of 77. Born on June 24th, 1946, in Ilkeston, Derbyshire, England, to Edith and Harry Tudor, John Tudor leaves behind a remarkable legacy shaped by his passion for soccer and dedication to developing young athletes. After a courageous ten-year battle with dementia, his passing marks the end of an era for many who were touched by his life and work.
John Tudor was more than just a coach; he was a cornerstone of the Minnesota soccer community. For over four decades, his influence resonated deeply through organizations like Tonka United, CC United, and the State of Minnesota coaching programs. His commitment extended to Holy Family High School, where he was a cherished mentor to countless players. John Tudor’s infectious enthusiasm for the game cultivated not only exceptional skills but also a lasting love for soccer in generations of athletes. His contributions were rightfully recognized with his induction into the Minnesota Hall of Fame, solidifying his place among the state’s most impactful figures in the sport.
Beyond youth development, John Tudor played a pivotal role in shaping professional soccer in Minnesota. Working alongside Buzz Lagos, he was instrumental in building the Minnesota Thunder, laying a critical foundation for the Major League Soccer team that Minnesota proudly supports today. This early groundwork highlights John Tudor’s vision and commitment to the growth of soccer at all levels within the state.
Before his celebrated coaching career, John Tudor was a dedicated and accomplished player. His journey began with his hometown club, Ilkeston Town, before turning professional with Coventry City. His professional playing career further included stints at Sheffield United, Newcastle United, and Stoke City in England, culminating in a move to Belgium where he played for Ghent. Among these teams, Newcastle United held a special place in his heart. He often spoke fondly of the electrifying atmosphere and unwavering support of the “Geordie” crowd, memories that remained vibrant throughout his life.
While soccer was a central passion, John Tudor’s family was the true heart of his life. He deeply cherished moments spent with his grandchildren and loved ones, always finding ways to connect his love for the game with his family life. Throughout the challenging years of his illness, his wife, Anne, demonstrated extraordinary strength and devotion, providing unwavering care and love until his final days.
John Tudor is predeceased by his brother Brian, sister Anne, and parents Edith and Harry. He is survived by his loving wife Anne, children Shelley and Jonathan, and grandchildren Gracie, Brianna, and Violet. His memory will be treasured by his family, friends, and the countless individuals whose lives he enriched.
A funeral service to celebrate John Tudor’s life will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 1st, at St John’s Lutheran Church, 2451 Fairview Lane, Mound, MN 55364. Following the service, a social gathering will be held at Brit’s Pub upstairs from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. In honor of John Tudor’s vibrant spirit and love for the game, attendees are encouraged to wear their team colors to share memories of John Tudor.
