John Schneeberger, affectionately known as “Papa John,” lived a life brimming with love, laughter, and dedication. Born on September 2, 1947, in Oil City Hospital to Beatrice Mae Holden and Pline Jason Schneeberger, John passed away peacefully at his home on February 28, 2021, surrounded by his family. His life, marked by service to his country and unwavering devotion to his loved ones, leaves behind a legacy of joy and cherished memories.
Early Life and Service to His Nation
Growing up in Oil City, John Schneeberger attended local schools before graduating from West Nottingham Academy. His commitment to service led him to the army, where he completed basic training at Ft. Jackson, South Carolina. He bravely served a year in Vietnam, earning the Vietnam Service Medal with two bronze stars and a sharpshooter badge, demonstrating his courage and dedication to his country.
A Love Story for the Ages
According to John Schneeberger himself, his life truly began when he met Carole Sue Ray. Their 49-year marriage became a testament to enduring love and partnership, inspiring all who knew them. Together, they built a home in Oil City, raising their two children, Heather (Mark) Motter and John Jason (Kenzie) Schneeberger. His role as a husband and father was central to his life, and his family was his greatest pride.
Community and Career
John Schneeberger was deeply rooted in his Oil City community. He passionately supported the Oil City Oilers, proudly serving as Vice President of the Blue and White Booster Club. Professionally, he dedicated years to the Continental Can Company after returning from Vietnam, and later concluded his career at Federal Express, showcasing his strong work ethic and reliability.
Embracing Life’s Joys
Even after a diagnosis of advanced Parkinson’s in retirement, John Schneeberger’s spirit remained undimmed. Though the illness limited some activities he once loved, he continued to embrace life with positivity and without complaint. Known as the “life of every party,” John had an infectious zest for life. His legendary “Schneeberger shuffle” on the dance floor was a sight to behold. He treasured moments spent with family and friends, creating lasting memories during summers at Conneaut Lake, relaxing evenings on his deck, beach trips, cruises, and unforgettable Disney vacations at Wilderness Lodge.
A Grandfather’s Love and Lasting Legacy
John Schneeberger’s love extended deeply to his four grandchildren: Maggie and Charlie Motter, and Evan and Adam Schneeberger. Each grandchild knew they were loved “a million, trillion bushels.” He was their biggest fan, and his unwavering support and love will undoubtedly continue to resonate in their lives. While his physical presence is gone, his spirit of joy and love remains.
In honoring John Schneeberger’s wishes, there will be no tears of sadness, but smiles of remembrance. Raise a Pabst Blue Ribbon in his honor, play your favorite oldies, and celebrate a life well-lived. A private celebration with full military honors will be held at a later date, with arrangements handled by Reinsel Funeral Home. For those wishing to further honor his memory, donations to The Vietnam Veterans of America or the Parkinson’s Foundation would be a meaningful tribute.
