Education and Experience Equivalencies Explained
Johns Hopkins University recognizes that valuable experience can sometimes substitute formal education. For positions where this is applicable, the university follows a defined equivalency formula. Generally, 30 undergraduate credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate credits are considered equivalent to one year of work experience. Furthermore, relevant professional experience may also be considered in place of required educational qualifications on the same basis. In certain roles, up to two years of non-related college coursework might be applicable towards meeting the minimum education and experience requirements. Please refer to the specific job description for each position to confirm whether education and experience equivalencies are permitted and applicable.
Information for Applicants Completing Their Studies
If you are in the final stages of your academic program and will soon graduate, we encourage you to apply for positions at Johns Hopkins University even if you do not yet fully meet the posted requirements. Candidates completing their final semester or quarter of study will be given consideration. You may be asked to provide documentation confirming your expected graduation date to finalize your application.
Understanding Background Checks at Johns Hopkins
Johns Hopkins University is committed to creating a safe and secure environment. Therefore, successful candidates will undergo a pre-employment background check. In alignment with our commitment to social responsibility, Johns Hopkins embraces candidates with diverse backgrounds, including those with prior involvement in the justice system. Consistent with applicable laws and policies, a criminal history does not automatically disqualify an applicant from employment. Each case is reviewed individually, considering the nature and date of any conviction and its relevance to the job’s essential functions and qualifications.

Johns Hopkins University deeply values diversity, equity, and inclusion. These principles are fundamental to our institutional framework and are actively promoted through the JHU Roadmap on Diversity and Inclusion. We strive to create a welcoming and inclusive environment for all members of our community.

Vaccine Policy at Johns Hopkins University
While Johns Hopkins University strongly encourages COVID-19 vaccination, it is no longer mandatory for most positions. However, all faculty, staff, and students are required to receive the seasonal flu vaccine. Exceptions to both COVID-19 and flu vaccine requirements may be granted for documented medical reasons or sincerely held religious beliefs. Requests for exceptions must be formally submitted through the JHU vaccination registry. It is important to note that these updated guidelines do not apply to the School of Medicine (SOM). SOM hires are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 with an FDA-approved vaccine and must provide proof of vaccination. For applicants to School of Medicine positions, please visit https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/coronavirus/covid-19-vaccine/ for specific requirements. Additional Health Provisions
Depending on the specific campus and nature of your role, additional health provisions may be applicable. Your recruiter will provide detailed guidance if these apply to your position. Typically, for roles in clinical areas, laboratories, positions working with research subjects, or those involving community contact, a pre-employment physical is required. This physical includes documentation of immune status for Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B, and Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may require documentation of two MMR vaccines, two Varicella vaccines, or antibody status through laboratory testing. Any required vaccinations will be provided at no cost at our Occupational Health office.
