John Poulakidas has rapidly become a standout player for the Yale Bulldogs, demonstrating consistent growth and earning significant recognition in the college basketball landscape. His journey from a Neuqua Valley High School standout to a key player in the Ivy League showcases his dedication and talent on the court.

Ivy League Honors and National Recognition

Poulakidas’ impressive 2023-24 season culminated in being named second team All-Ivy and NABC District 13 second team. Starting in all 33 games, he led the Yale team in three-pointers made (83), a figure that ranks as the second-highest single-season total in school history. Furthermore, he was second in team scoring, averaging 13.4 points per game. His long-range shooting prowess placed him third in the Ivy League for three-pointers made per game (2.52) and tenth in three-point field goal percentage (.405), solidifying his reputation as a reliable scorer and outside threat. Adding to his accolades, Poulakidas was one of only 14 college players nationwide selected to participate in the prestigious Jayson Tatum Elite Camp in July 2024, a testament to his burgeoning potential and national visibility.

NCAA Tournament Highlight and Consistent Performance

One of the defining moments of Poulakidas’ season was his stellar performance in Yale’s NCAA Tournament victory over Auburn. He scored a game-high 28 points, shooting with remarkable efficiency: 10-of-15 from the field and an impressive 6-of-9 from beyond the arc. This performance on a national stage underscored his ability to perform under pressure and against top-tier competition. Throughout the season, Poulakidas displayed consistency, including a standout home game against Columbia where he tallied 26 points and drained seven three-pointers.

Building a Strong Foundation: 2022-23 Season

In his sophomore year (2022-23), John Poulakidas also started every game (30) and was the second-leading scorer for the Bulldogs, averaging 12.0 points per game. He ranked fourth in the Ivy League with 67 three-pointers made and sixth in three-point field goal percentage (.401), further establishing his role as a key offensive contributor. He reached double figures in scoring in 17 games, highlighted by a career-high 30 points in an overtime victory against Princeton, where he shot 11-of-19 from the field. His significant improvement from his first year was recognized with the team’s Most Improved Player Award.

Early Career and Roots in Neuqua Valley

During the 2021-22 season, Poulakidas began his Yale career by appearing in 20 games as a reserve, gaining valuable experience, including playing in both Ivy League Tournament games. He demonstrated flashes of his potential, such as scoring 10 points against Columbia. He was also honored with the team’s Josh Hill Dedication Award, acknowledging his commitment and work ethic.

Before Yale, John Poulakidas left an indelible mark at Neuqua Valley High School, becoming the school’s all-time leading scorer with over 1,300 career points. He earned two IBCA all-state selections and was a three-time all-conference and all-county honoree. His high school career included a remarkable 49-point game in a double-overtime victory. He also contributed to Neuqua Valley’s 2020 regional championship and played AAU basketball for Young & Reckless and MoKan Elite, gaining exposure and developing his skills in competitive environments.

Off the Court and Choosing Yale

Beyond basketball, Poulakidas is involved in his community, volunteering at Hesed House, a homeless shelter, and St. Athanasios Greek Orthodox Kids Summer Camp. His decision to attend Yale was influenced by the long-term value of a Yale education. As he stated, “Because attending this university is a 40-year decision, not just a four-year one, and I feel that it was best suited for me on and off the court. Not only is Yale and elite academic institution, but Coach Jones and his staff have built a tremendously strong basketball program.” This perspective highlights his maturity and thoughtful approach to both his athletic and academic pursuits at Yale University.
