John Morris stands as a broadcasting icon, synonymous with Baylor University athletics for three decades. Recognized in 2019 by the National Sports Media Association as Texas Co-Sportscaster of the Year, John Morris is more than just a voice; he’s a Baylor institution. Currently in his 30th season as the lead voice and 38th year overall with Baylor, including an apprenticeship from 1987 to 1994 under the legendary Frank Fallon, Morris holds the title of Assistant Athletic Director for Broadcasting. His extensive duties include play-by-play commentary for Baylor Football and the 2021 National Champion Men’s Basketball team, alongside broadcasts for Big 12 Now on ESPN+.
Entering the 2024 football season, John Morris has achieved an extraordinary milestone, broadcasting an unbroken streak of 429 Baylor University Football games. His versatility extends beyond football and basketball, having lent his voice to Baylor Baseball, Softball, Women’s Basketball, Tennis, Soccer, Volleyball, Equestrian, Track & Field, and Acrobatics & Tumbling. Furthermore, he hosts Baylor Coach’s Shows and the popular Sic ‘Em Podcast, demonstrating his deep engagement with Baylor sports across the board.
In a landmark achievement in November 2024, John Morris was honored with the National Football Foundation’s prestigious Chris Schenkel Award. This accolade, established in 1996, celebrates individuals with remarkable and enduring careers in college football broadcasting, specifically those with strong ties to a university or platform. Named after Chris Schenkel, the esteemed ABC Sports broadcaster, the award places John Morris in the company of broadcasting legends. Notably, Baylor University becomes the first institution to boast two Chris Schenkel Award recipients, with John Morris following in the footsteps of his mentor, Frank Fallon, who received the award in 2001. Adding to his accolades, in August 2024, the Greater Waco Chamber of Commerce presented John Morris with the Dave Campbell Award, recognizing his significant contributions to football in Central Texas. This honor comes after receiving the Frank Fallon Sportsmanship Award from the same chamber in November 2002, further cementing his legacy within the Waco community.
A proud alumnus of Baylor University, graduating in December 1980, John Morris transitioned to Baylor Athletics after a successful 15-year career as a TV sports anchor and Sports Director at Waco’s CBS affiliate, KWTX-TV, joining Baylor full-time in 1995. His dedication to Baylor was further recognized when he was named one of Baylor’s outstanding young alumni at Homecoming in November 1999.
Originally from Louisville, Kentucky, John Morris graduated with honors from Danville High School in 1977 before his Baylor journey. He is a devoted family man, a father of three and grandfather of four, married to Terri Melton, a fellow 1985 Baylor graduate. Their children, Meagan (35), Maddie (31), and M.J. (27), are all Baylor graduates, reflecting the family’s deep Baylor roots. The Morris family are active members of Harris Creek Baptist Church, underscoring their commitment to community and faith.
