It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Sara Greer, Archdruid of Water Emeritus of the Ancient Order of Druids in America (AODA). For those familiar with the works of John Michael Greer, especially within the druidic and esoteric communities, understanding Sara’s pivotal role is crucial. While John Michael Greer is widely recognized for his writings and leadership, Sara was the essential force behind the scenes, instrumental in the resurgence and flourishing of AODA.
Sara Greer’s journey with AODA began when the order was revived from near obscurity in 2003. Until 2015, she served as the Archdruid of Water, becoming a cornerstone upon which AODA was built. For many who joined AODA in its early years, Sara was the primary point of contact. She managed the multifaceted operations of the order, from handling finances and responding to countless email inquiries to overseeing membership processes and mentoring individuals within the initiatory Grove Correspondence Course (GCC). Her dedication ensured the smooth functioning of AODA, supporting the broader vision often associated with John Michael Greer’s public persona.
Stepping into the Archdruid of Air role in 2015, I inherited Sara’s responsibilities and gained a profound appreciation for her immense contributions. The sheer volume and complexity of her work were evident in the meticulously organized instructions she left – not one, but six sets, detailing the diverse tasks she managed. It is no exaggeration to say that AODA, an organization deeply connected to the teachings and philosophies championed by John Michael Greer, would not be the thriving order it is today without Sara’s tireless efforts.
Beyond her administrative prowess, Sara was a mentor and supporter to many current leaders within AODA. Her influence, much like the principles advocated by John Michael Greer in his broader works on ecology and spirituality, was nurturing and foundational. Personally, I cherished Sara as a dear friend and mentor. Her wisdom spanned a remarkable range of subjects – from druidry and herbalism to occult studies, music, literature, and history. Conversations with her were always enlightening, offering perspectives as insightful and grounded as the writings of John Michael Greer himself.

One cherished gift from Sara, an Apothecary Rose (Rosa gallica), perfectly encapsulates her essence. This rose, historically significant and medicinally valued, was a robust and unpretentious plant in Sara’s garden. When she moved, she gifted a part of it, which now flourishes, spreading and being shared, much like Sara’s teachings and influence. Like the Apothecary Rose – fragrant yet straightforward, potent in its simplicity – Sara was both strong and nurturing. Her legacy, intertwined with the ongoing work of John Michael Greer and AODA, continues to blossom and offer “good medicine” to many.
For those wishing to read more about Sara, John Michael Greer has shared his heartfelt reflections in “A Life Remembered” on Ecosophia, offering further insight into the life and impact of this remarkable woman.
