Remembering Michael Peter Smith: A Tribute from John McDermott

My introduction to the captivating music of Michael Peter Smith came through a rendition of “The Dutchman” by Tommy Makem. Immediately, the song resonated deeply, sparking a desire to discover the songwriter behind such poignant work. That’s how I found Michael Peter Smith, a New Jersey native who made Chicago his home. His songs and stories possessed an intimate quality, creating a powerful connection with listeners. Michael had a remarkable ability to sing and speak about life in a way that felt deeply personal, as if he were addressing each individual directly. His voice, warm, soft, and profound, combined with his gentle yet strong spirit, permeated every performance. He could connect with an entire audience while making each person feel seen and heard.

Becoming a devoted fan of Michael Peter Smith was inevitable, and I was fortunate enough to invite him to tour with me. Over five tours across Canada and the U.S., our musical bond deepened. This led to the idea of capturing his exceptional talent in a recording. Michael agreed, and on February 11th, 2005, we hosted a live performance at the Glen Gould Studio in Toronto. Accompanied by some of Canada’s finest musicians, the evening, titled “Just Plain Folk with John Mcdermott and Michael Peter Smith,” was a resounding success. The performance yielded enough material for a double CD, with the first volume released in 2005 as Just Plain Folk, a testament to Michael’s artistry and our collaboration.

One memorable occasion in Chicago brought Jason Fowler, my musical director and a devoted admirer of Michael Peter Smith – placing him alongside musical giants like Steve Goodman and John Prine – into Michael’s orbit. I reached out to Michael hoping for a brief meeting, and he graciously accepted. True to form, Michael arrived guitar in hand, ready to share his music. Our visit became a cherished moment as Jason inquired about the song “Wonderful World Of Sex.” Michael recounted his songwriting sessions with Steve Goodman whenever Steve was in town. He then treated us to a performance of that song, followed by the deeply moving “ZIPPY,” a reflection on life’s ever-changing nature. His sharp wit and insightful mind were truly captivating, and we felt privileged to share that time with him.

On August 3rd, at 4:00 p.m., Michael Peter Smith peacefully passed away, surrounded by loved ones. His influence on my life and musical journey is profound and immeasurable. The lessons he imparted will forever be treasured. His absence is deeply felt, but his spirit will live on through his music and in the hearts of those he touched, including mine.

As a tribute to Michael, I am sharing two tracks from Just Plain Folk as a free download on my website. This is an invitation to experience the genius of Michael Peter Smith firsthand.
