A graduate of the IU School of Medicine in 2004, Dr. John Lind laid a strong foundation with bachelor’s and master’s degrees in biology, complemented by a certificate in Business Foundations. His rigorous postgraduate training includes a transitional internship at St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis (2005), a three-year ophthalmology residency at Saint Louis University Eye Institute in Missouri (2008), where he was honored as chief resident in 2017, and a specialized glaucoma fellowship at the prestigious Bascom Palmer Eye Institute at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine (2009).
His commitment to patient care has been consistently acknowledged throughout his career. Dr. Lind received the F. Harrison Jerrold Most Outstanding Resident Award in 2008 and the Roya Rabbini Excellence in Patient Care awards in both 2007 and 2008. Furthermore, he was distinguished as a SLUCARE Ambassador for Excellence in Patient Care in 2007, highlighting his exceptional dedication to his patients.
Dr. Lind’s passion for education is evident in his extensive academic career. He served as an Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at Saint Louis University before becoming an Associate Professor at Washington University in Saint Louis in 2017. His exceptional teaching abilities were recognized with the Professor of the Year award at Saint Louis University in 2011 and at Washington University in Saint Louis in 2019. Dr. John Lind has profoundly impacted the medical community by training nearly 100 residents and 10 glaucoma fellows, in addition to mentoring countless medical students, shaping the future of ophthalmology.
Returning to IU School of Medicine in 2019 as an Associate Professor of Ophthalmology and Assistant Director of Medical Student Education, Dr. Lind continues to contribute to his alma mater and the development of future physicians.
Beyond his clinical and academic roles, Dr. Lind is a leader in continuing medical education. He co-founded and co-directs the Innovations in Glaucoma Surgery Continuing Medical Education Program and the Saint Louis Glaucoma Fellows Conference, fostering advancements and knowledge sharing within the field.
Dr. John Lind’s expertise is also sought after in scholarly publishing. He serves as a reviewer for leading peer-reviewed journals including the American Journal of Ophthalmology, JAMA Ophthalmology, Journal of Glaucoma, and Journal of Clinical and Experimental Ophthalmology. His involvement extends to pivotal research as an investigator in significant clinical trials such as the Primary Tube versus Trabeculectomy Trial (PTVT), IIHTT NIH study, Aquasys Shunt Study, Bimatoprost SR, and Perrigo Studies, contributing to the evidence base for glaucoma treatment. In 2019, he received the Achievement Award from the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO), further acknowledging his significant contributions.
His service to the professional community includes roles on the Subspecialty Day Program Committee for Glaucoma, the Annual Program glaucoma section review, the Preferred Practice Patterns (PPP) in Glaucoma Committee, and as a section editor for the ONE Network of the AAO. For the American Glaucoma Society (AGS), Dr. Lind has served in numerous leadership positions, including Surgery Day Co-Chair, Planning Committee, Fellowship Review Committee, Strategic Planning and Bylaws Committee, Member Education Task Force, and the Advocacy and Government Relations Committee, demonstrating his commitment to advancing the society and the field.
Dr. Lind’s research interests are focused on improving glaucoma care through surgical device innovation, managing complications of glaucoma surgery, and advancing medical education. He has published extensively on topics ranging from cornea and ocular microbiology to glaucoma, sharing his insights and contributing to the body of knowledge in ophthalmology.
