Born on August 16, 1962, in Vincennes, Indiana, John Lackey lived a life marked by dedication to his family, a successful career in home construction, and a deep connection to his community. Growing up in Vincennes as John Thomas Lackey, he was the son of John Thomas Lackey and Sue Ellen Bedford Lackey. He pursued higher education at Vincennes University, laying the foundation for his professional journey. His early career began with Crook Construction in Vincennes, where he honed his skills and work ethic. Later, John Lackey transitioned to Indianapolis, Indiana, to join MI Homes, a move that would prove pivotal in his career trajectory.
At MI Homes, John Lackey distinguished himself as a talented and dedicated builder. He not only contributed to the construction of numerous homes but also proudly built his own residence, showcasing his personal commitment to quality and craftsmanship. His exceptional work was recognized through numerous awards from MI Homes, a testament to his expertise and passion for home building.
Beyond his professional achievements, John Lackey was deeply proud of his roots in Vincennes. A significant highlight of his life was his participation in the 1981 Vincennes Lincoln High School Basketball State Championship. Being part of this winning team was a source of immense pride and remained a cherished memory throughout his life. This accomplishment reflected his dedication, teamwork, and the spirit of Vincennes.
Family was the cornerstone of John Lackey’s life. His daughter, Amy Jo (Brandon) Decker, held a special place in his heart, and the recent arrival of his grandson, Alan Decker, brought him immeasurable joy. Becoming a grandfather was a role he embraced wholeheartedly. He was present and beaming with pride at Alan’s adoption ceremony on July 20, 2022, just days before his passing. His love extended to his nephew Mitchel Morical and niece Makenna Morical, whom he enjoyed teasing and with whom he shared a close bond.
John Lackey possessed a remarkable ability to connect with people. He was known for his friendly and outgoing personality, genuinely never meeting a stranger. He was always surrounded by family and friends, drawn to his kind heart and willingness to lend a helping hand. A cherished tradition was his annual attendance at the Indianapolis 500, an event he enjoyed since childhood with his father and later with his friends. These gatherings at the track exemplified his love for community and connection.
John Lackey was preceded in death by his parents, John Thomas Lackey and Sue Ellen Bedford Lackey, and his brother, Scott Lackey. He is survived by his loving daughter, Amy Jo (Brandon) Decker, and grandson, Alan Decker, of Bruceville, Indiana; his sister Susan Lackey (Dennis) Morical, and his nephew Mitchell Morical and niece Makenna Morical of McCordsville, Indiana.
In accordance with his wishes, cremation was chosen for his final disposition. The family invites friends and loved ones to a Celebration of Life in honor of John Lackey on September 10, 2022, from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM at FoxGarden, located at 10410 Olio Rd, Fortville, IN 46040.
