Born and raised in Altoona, Congressman John Joyce embodies the values of his community. He is a third-generation Altoona native, the son of Bernard and Peggy (Hallinan) Joyce. His deep roots in the region inform his understanding of the needs and concerns of the people he represents. After graduating from Bishop Guilfoyle High School, he began his higher education journey at Penn State Altoona before earning his undergraduate degree with honors from Penn State University Park in 1979. Driven by a passion for medicine, he pursued his Doctor of Medicine degree from Temple University, graduating in 1983. His commitment to medical excellence led him to further training at the prestigious Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore and with the U.S. Navy in Portsmouth, Virginia, experiences that shaped his approach to healthcare and public service.
Congressman John Joyce is not only a dedicated public servant but also a distinguished physician. He is a Fellow in both the American College of Physicians and the American Academy of Dermatology, reflecting his expertise and contributions to the medical field. In 1991, he and his wife, Dr. Alice Plummer Joyce, established Altoona Dermatology Associates. For over 25 years, their practice has been a cornerstone of healthcare in Central Pennsylvania, providing care to families across all ten counties within the 13th Congressional District. This extensive experience in direct patient care provides Congressman Joyce with a unique perspective on healthcare policy and the challenges faced by both patients and medical professionals.
Beyond his professional achievements, Congressman John Joyce is deeply committed to giving back to his hometown. A lifelong member of the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament in Altoona, his faith and community spirit are central to his life. He has actively volunteered at the St. Vincent DePaul Soup Kitchen, demonstrating his compassion for those in need. Furthermore, he has lent his expertise and leadership to various community organizations, serving on the Advisory Boards of Penn State Altoona, the American Cancer Society, the United Way, and the Goodman Trust. These roles underscore his dedication to the well-being and progress of Altoona and the wider South Central Pennsylvania region.
