John J. Donahoe, a cherished lifelong resident of Pelham, New York, passed away peacefully on May 19, 2022, at the age of 89. Born on February 13, 1933, in New York City, he was the only child of the late John and Catherine Donahoe. John’s life was deeply rooted in Pelham, where he spent his formative years and contributed significantly to the community.
His early education began at Siwanoy Elementary School and continued at Pelham Memorial High School. During his high school years, John excelled in athletics, participating in track and field and playing football, graduating in 1950. His pursuit of knowledge and higher education led him to Cornell University, a prestigious institution where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Hotel Administration in 1954. This foundation from Cornell would serve him well throughout his successful career.
John J. Donahoe embarked on his professional journey in sales with Smith-Corona Marchant Inc. (SCM), a company specializing in adding machines. His dedication and sales acumen were quickly apparent, propelling him through the ranks to National Sales Manager. SCM was also a significant place in his personal life; it was there he met his beloved wife, Carolyn Daly. Their love story began at work and culminated in marriage at Christ the King Church in Yonkers, NY, in 1960. The couple established their home in Pelham Manor, where they built a family and raised their three children: James, Paul, and Mary Ann.
In 1971, demonstrating his entrepreneurial spirit, John J. Donahoe ventured out to establish his own business, Sales Careers Inc., a recruiting firm specializing in sales positions. For over three decades, Sales Careers Inc. thrived under John’s leadership, successfully placing countless individuals in sales roles within the office automation industry. His son, James, joined him in this venture, working alongside his father as a recruiter for over 22 years, a testament to John’s mentorship and family values.
Beyond his professional achievements, John J. Donahoe was deeply embedded in the Pelham community. He was a lifetime member of OLPH Catholic Church, reflecting his strong faith. His social connections extended to the Pelham Country Club, where he was a long-time member, and the Pelham Rotary Club, where he contributed to local service initiatives. Sports played a significant role in John’s life. He dedicated years to coaching in the Pelham Little League, leading teams to championships and inspiring young athletes. He personally enjoyed bowling, tennis, and paddle tennis at the country club. A passionate sports enthusiast, John was a loyal supporter of the Cornell football team, attending games annually and traveling to away games, regardless of their season’s record. He also passionately cheered for the New York Mets and the New York Giants, embodying the spirit of a true New York sports fan. Furthermore, John was a familiar and admired figure in Pelham as an avid walker. Rain or shine, he could be seen walking daily, prioritizing his health and well-being. In his later years, he formed a walking group with friends, cherishing the camaraderie and conversations shared during their walks.
John J. Donahoe will be fondly remembered for his loving and loyal nature, his strong work ethic, his deep commitment to family, and his witty sense of humor. He had a genuine love for people, especially his family and a wide circle of close friends. Remarkably, he maintained connections with friends from every chapter of his life – from elementary school to his professional career. These friendships were deeply valued, and he was profoundly grateful for the love and support they provided, particularly during his wife Carolyn’s prolonged illness. His absence will be deeply felt by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
John is survived by his children: James T. Donahoe, Paul Donahoe (Erin Rieger), Mary Ann (Brad) Serlin, and his cherished grandchildren: Kathryn Donahoe, Caroline Serlin, and William Serlin. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Carolyn M. Donahoe.
