Manhattan College has announced the appointment of John Hansbury as the new head coach for its swimming and diving program. Hansbury brings a wealth of experience and a proven track record of success to the Jaspers, having established himself as a prominent figure in the local New York swimming community.
Hansbury’s impressive coaching career began in high school swimming. He quickly made a name for himself while leading the swimming programs at Iona Prep (2000-2002) and Horace Greeley High School (2001). His tenure at Iona Prep was particularly notable, culminating in a Division II Title for the Gaels in 2002, the same year he was recognized as Catholic High School Coach of the Year.
Transitioning to the collegiate level, John Hansbury served as the lead assistant coach for Iona University Swim & Dive from 2002 to 2007, working under the guidance of Nick Cavataro. He continued his association with Iona, taking on a volunteer role while simultaneously building the GAEL Aquatic Club as head coach from 2007 to 2015. This club, established by Iona University, further solidified Hansbury’s reputation for developing swimming talent.
Since 2019, Hansbury has been contributing his expertise as the Associate Head Coach of Empire Swimming, a well-regarded competitive swim club based in White Plains, N.Y. He will maintain this position alongside his new responsibilities at Manhattan College, demonstrating his commitment to the sport and his athletes.
Hansbury expressed his enthusiasm for this new chapter, stating, “I wouldn’t be here without the support of Athletic Director Irma Garcia, Deputy Athletic Director Anthony Kurtin, and Senior Associate Athletic Director of Compliance Ann Gulino. When I first met them and heard of their plan for Manhattan College and the swimming and diving program, I knew I wanted to be a part of it.”
His connection to Manhattan College extends beyond his professional aspirations. A White Plains High School alumnus and record holder in the 200m and 500m freestyle, John Hansbury also competed at the University of Florida, a nationally recognized swimming powerhouse, earning a bachelor’s degree in history in 1999. Adding to his ties with Manhattan, Hansbury’s father, uncle, and two younger brothers are all Manhattan graduates, making this appointment a personal milestone.
“I feel it’s my turn to be a Jasper and I am thrilled to be given this amazing opportunity to lead and build the swimming and diving program here at Manhattan,” Hansbury concluded, signaling his readiness to lead the Jaspers to new heights.
