Iona Prep alumnus John Gilchrist ’86 is widely recognized, not just within his alma mater’s community, but across generations, for his unforgettable role as “Mikey” in the iconic 1971 Life cereal commercial. A recent Newsday article highlighted Gilchrist’s enduring connection to this piece of pop culture history and his successful career beyond the screen.
The Life cereal commercial, featuring John Gilchrist as the famously picky eater “Mikey,” alongside his real-life brothers Tommy ’81 and Mike ’83, became a cultural phenomenon. Despite having no lines himself, the commercial, with its implied question “He likes it! Hey Mikey!”, cemented John Gilchrist’s place in advertising history. Even four decades later, the legacy of “Mikey” follows him, a testament to the ad’s lasting impact. For John, it was one of around 250 commercials he filmed, but it remains the most memorable.
Transitioning from acting during his time at Iona College, John Gilchrist embarked on a successful career in ad sales. He honed his expertise in radio, including a period at ESPN, before moving into television with MSG Networks. Currently serving as Director of Media Sales, John negotiates advertising deals, bringing his industry knowledge and experience to a network he felt a personal connection to, given his appreciation for Madison Square Garden.
The Gilchrist family’s foray into acting was a family affair, with all seven siblings participating at some point. This venture not only provided opportunities but also contributed to significant family milestones, including moving to Yonkers, investing in East Hampton real estate, and funding college educations. However, John emphasizes that financial gain was never the primary motivation.
While the “Mikey” commercial remains a significant part of his past, John Gilchrist embraces its legacy. He appreciates the continued interest and acknowledges it as a part of his identity. Living in Pelham with his wife Jennifer and their three children, John has built a fulfilling life both personally and professionally, proving that his identity extends far beyond the boy who famously liked Life cereal.
