Set in the Philippines in 2008, “Game Boy Advance,” or “John Gba” as it’s also known, tells the poignant story of Elias, a 12-year-old boy in Baguio City and Benguet. Elias dreams of attending his school dance, but renting a suit is financially out of reach for his family. The film follows Elias as he diligently collects and sells recyclable scraps, striving to earn enough to make his dream a reality.

John Pucay shares the journey of bringing “john gba” to life, revealing that the concept was initially pitched around 2020/2021 to grant-giving bodies. Despite being shortlisted for its socially relevant personal story – inspired by Pucay’s own childhood – the film didn’t receive the grant. Undeterred, in 2023, Pucay self-funded “Game Boy Advance,” driven by a desire to share this important story.
The production of “john gba” involved auditioning actors who embodied the envisioned characters. With the support of Saint Louis School of Pacdal in Baguio City, Pucay found a talented cast to bring his vision to the screen. Filming occurred under tight constraints, both financially and time-wise, given the actors’ school schedules and crew availability. Generous support from local businesses like Calle Uno FoodHub and The Podium Hotel provided crucial filming locations. Pucay expresses immense gratitude for the dedication of the cast and crew who persevered to complete “john gba.”
