The hockey world and beyond are in mourning following the sudden passing of John Michael Gaudreau at the age of 31 on August 29th, 2024. Tragically, John passed away alongside his brother, Matthew Ryan Gaudreau, age 29, leaving behind a legacy both on and off the ice.
John Gaudreau was more than just a name in hockey; he was a devoted son, a loving husband to his wife of three years, Meredith Alexandria (nee Morris), and an adoring father to his children, Noa and John. His sudden departure has left an irreplaceable void in the hearts of his family, friends, and the countless fans who admired him.
Preceded in death by his grandfather, John Guy Gaudreau, and grandmother, Marie Lloyd, John’s memory will be cherished and kept alive by his surviving family. This includes his wife, Meredith, his children, Noa and John, his parents, Jane (nee Lloyd) and Guy Gaudreau, and his sisters, Kristen (A.J.) and Kaitlyn (Devin). He is also survived by his parents-in-law, Ed and Cheryl Morris, his sister-in-law Madeline Gaudreau, and numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members including Frances (Billy), Tyler (Pat), Lily (Ryan), brothers-in-law Eddie and Matthew, and nieces Kamryn, Logan, Emma, Chloe, and Claudia, and soon-to-arrive nephew Tripp.
John Gaudreau’s journey in hockey began to take shape at Gloucester Catholic High School, where he honed his skills under the guidance of his father, playing alongside his brother. His talent and dedication propelled him to excel in the USHL with the Dubuque Fighting Saints, before reaching the collegiate level with the Boston College Eagles. It was at Boston College that John’s exceptional abilities were nationally recognized when he was awarded the prestigious Hobey Baker Award, an honor bestowed upon the best player in men’s college hockey. This achievement marked a significant milestone, paving the way for his entry into the National Hockey League (NHL). Over a remarkable 10-year NHL career, John Gaudreau became a celebrated seven-time All-Star, captivating audiences with his skill and passion for the game.
Despite his fame and stardom as a world-renowned hockey player, John remained grounded and humble. At his core, John was a simple man who valued the time spent with his loved ones above all else. His family was his inner circle, and his closest friends were considered family. Beyond his professional hockey career, John embraced competition in all forms. Whether it was participating in a men’s softball league during the summer months, engaging in a friendly game of backyard cornhole, playing darts in the garage, adding stakes to a round of golf with hole-by-hole bets, enjoying card games, or even racing through word search puzzles, John infused every activity with fun and a competitive spirit. He had a knack for making ordinary moments extraordinary, and there was always something to play for – and more often than not, John emerged victorious.
While John Gaudreau achieved incredible heights in professional hockey, his most cherished role was that of a father. His children were the center of his world. He and Meredith treasured the quiet moments of early mornings with their kids, fueled by black iced coffee, and the relaxed evenings spent watching television together on the couch. John and Meredith shared a deep bond, they were not only husband and wife but also inseparable best friends and soulmates, navigating life’s journey side-by-side.
John’s infectious smile and unique personality left a lasting impression on everyone he met. He was known for being both shy and the life of the party, quiet yet hilarious, and witty with an innocent charm. Above all, John was remembered for his kindness and humility. To know John was to instantly consider him a favorite person, such was his warm and genuine nature.
John Gaudreau’s legacy extends far beyond hockey records and accolades. His true legacy will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. His memory serves as a constant reminder that the most meaningful achievements in life are the strong connections we forge with others.
