John Force’s Mixed Emotions as Daughter Courtney Likely Ends Racing Career

Legendary NHRA Funny Car driver John Force has publicly acknowledged his complex feelings regarding the recent announcement that his daughter, Courtney Force, is stepping away from her professional drag racing career. While not definitively stated as a permanent retirement, the circumstances strongly suggest a conclusion to her time behind the wheel.

For John Force, this news evokes a swirl of emotions. He cherishes countless memories of Courtney’s journey, from childhood days at the racetrack to her impressive rise as the winningest female Funny Car driver in a seven-year professional span. His pride in her personal growth and racing achievements is palpable.

“Courtney, my daughter, was raised in the racing world,” John Force shared with NBC Sports. “She practically lived at the tracks growing up, and even at home, her drawings were always about racing, usually depicting her racing against her dad in a Funny Car.”

He continued, reflecting on her early passion, “We noticed early on that all our daughters had an interest in racing, but Courtney’s was perhaps the most pronounced. From super comp to A-fuel, even while she pursued her college degree, it was always about race cars. Following in her sister Ashley’s footsteps into the pro ranks, she truly excelled.”

Courtney Force: A Rising Star in Funny Car Racing

Courtney Force’s natural talent and fervent passion for racing were undeniable. “Courtney took to racing like a fish to water,” John Force proudly stated. “She was living the dream, just like I was, embracing the travel, the race tracks, and especially the teams.” He emphasized the strong bond she forged with her team, considering them her extended family.

Beyond victories, Courtney demonstrated her competitive prowess by leading the points standings throughout 2018, fueling expectations of a championship title. However, her impact extended beyond the track. John Force highlighted her exceptional connection with fans, particularly children. “They adored her, and rightfully so. She’s a natural on social media, a public relations dream, and she consistently engaged with fans. She accomplished so much and now she’s ready for the next chapter in her life.”

Succession and Shifting Family Dynamics at John Force Racing

Despite his immense pride, John Force openly admitted to a tinge of sadness. He had envisioned Courtney eventually succeeding him as the prominent Funny Car driver for John Force Racing, carrying on the family legacy.

“Am I saddened by her leaving? Yes and no. I have mixed emotions,” John Force confessed. “Courtney had the potential to eventually take my place as a leading female Funny Car star. But now her focus is on moving forward in a different direction.”

He acknowledged the enduring allure of the sport, noting, “Once you’re hooked on racing, it’s incredibly difficult to leave completely. She’s not only driven race cars, but she’s also married to a race car driver, Graham Rahal, so racing will always be a part of her life.”

Courtney’s likely departure marks the second of John Force’s daughters to step back from racing, following Ashley Force Hood’s retirement in 2011 to start a family. However, Brittany Force, the 2017 NHRA Top Fuel champion, continues to race, ensuring the Force family’s continued presence in top-tier drag racing, alongside John Force himself.

Courtney Force’s Ongoing Role in Motorsports

While Courtney may be transitioning away from driving, John Force clarified that she will remain connected to the sport and John Force Racing. She will maintain relationships with sponsors like Advance Auto Parts and will have an ongoing presence within the team.

“Courtney will continue to collaborate with sponsors in the future,” Force affirmed. “She will remain visible in the racing world, not just at drag races.”

Reflecting on their close family ties, John Force shared, “The past few days have been special, spending time with Courtney and the entire family – Laurie, Brittany, Ashley, Adria, and myself. Keeping the family united is paramount. The door is always open for Courtney; she will always have a place at John Force Racing should she choose to return in any capacity.”
