John Dilworth, a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, passed away peacefully on September 8, 2023, at the age of 83. Born on December 19, 1939, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Dilworth Harper Marchant and Grace Estella Calderwood, John’s life was marked by hard work, generosity, and a deep love for his family and the outdoors.
Raised in Holladay, Utah, John Dilworth attended Olympus and Granite High Schools. While he was skilled in many trades, he excelled as a master carpenter, concrete finisher, and excavator. His strong work ethic led him to establish his own successful business, John D. Marchant Construction and Concrete. John was known for his dedication, often working from dawn until late evening, driven by a commitment to provide for his family and deliver quality work. He was respected for his honesty in both business and personal relationships, always speaking his mind with integrity. John Dilworth’s generosity was boundless; he consistently put others’ needs before his own and was always ready to help anyone who asked, rarely turning down a request.
In 1960, John Dilworth married his beloved Dorothy Anne Dille on September 22nd in Holladay, Utah. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, signifying the eternal bond they shared. Together, they raised five daughters and one son, and his family was the center of his world, bringing him immense joy and pride. John and Dorothy made their home and raised their family in Sandy, Utah, creating a loving and supportive environment.
John Dilworth had a profound love for the outdoors, with fishing being one of his greatest passions. He eagerly shared this love with his daughters and grandchildren, teaching them to fish and cherishing the many family outings spent at the lake. Camping and spending time at his cabin and home in Fairview, Utah, were also important to John. These properties were more than just getaways; they were places where he fostered family closeness and created lasting memories. Animals held a special place in John’s heart, and his dogs were always considered part of the family. He possessed a sharp and witty sense of humor that he readily shared with those around him, bringing laughter and light to gatherings. A lover of music across genres, John Dilworth was also a talented musician, proficient in playing the piano, cello, and guitar. He was blessed with a beautiful tenor voice and the gift of perfect pitch, enriching the lives of those who heard him sing.
A man of deep faith, John Dilworth held strong beliefs in the Gospel of Jesus Christ. He looked forward to a joyful reunion with his son Todd John, grandson Justice John Marchant, his parents, and his sisters Sylvia West and Kathleen Dahl, who predeceased him. He is survived by his wife Dorothy Anne, daughters Cheryl (Blake) Jensen, Trisha (Amy) Marchant, Shannon (Terry) Jenson, Kimberlee (Frank) Bice, Kandace (Dominic) Dato, 20 grandchildren, and 25 great-grandchildren.
