Ronal John Conner, Sr., affectionately known as Ron, peacefully passed away on Thursday, April 28, 2022, after a short illness, leaving behind a legacy of service, love, and unwavering commitment to his family, church, community, and friends. Born on April 1, 1942, in Akron, Ohio, John Conner lived a life exemplified by his dedication to others and his profound impact on those around him.
Throughout his life, John Conner was deeply involved in the lives of his sons, coaching them in baseball and football and actively participating as president of the Hot Stove Baseball Association. His commitment to youth extended to 4-H, where he served as an advisor, and the Randolph Lions Club, where he was a dedicated member. These activities highlight John Conner’s passion for nurturing young people and contributing to the well-being of his community.
Faith played a central role in John Conner’s life. He was a devoted member of High Street Christian Church, now known as Harmony Springs Christian Church. Within his church community, John Conner served in numerous leadership roles, including Deacon, Elder, and Trustee. He also shared his faith and knowledge as a Sunday school teacher for both youth and adults, further demonstrating his commitment to service and mentorship.
Beyond his formal roles, John Conner was a man who found joy in simple pleasures, especially spending time with his loved ones. Family vacations were a cherished tradition, creating lasting memories filled with laughter and stories that continue to be shared and treasured by his family. In his retirement years, these family trips evolved into memorable “trips” with a close circle of friends, illustrating his ability to build and maintain meaningful relationships throughout his life.
John Conner also found immense peace and contentment in his home in Randolph. His 6-acre property was a sanctuary where he could often be found touring on his golf cart with his dog by his side or peacefully observing wildlife from his sunroom. This connection to nature and his home provided him with a sense of tranquility and happiness.
To those who knew him, John Conner was the epitome of a helpful and reliable friend and family member. He was always ready to lend a hand, whether it was for construction projects, car or home repairs, offering a ride, providing advice, or simply being a listening ear. His generous spirit was perfectly encapsulated in his belief that “a man never stands taller as when he stoops to help a child.” This guiding principle underscored his life of service and compassion.
Academically, John Conner graduated from Springfield High School in 1960. His professional life was marked by a 40-year career at Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company. His innovative spirit was recognized when he received a $10,000 invention award from Goodyear, the largest sum awarded by the company at that time, showcasing his ingenuity and contributions to his workplace.
John Conner was predeceased by his parents, Orville (Buck) and Alice (Joy) Conner. He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Carol. His memory will be cherished by his three sons: Michael (Lori) of Uniontown, Patrick (Mikelle) of Ormond Beach, and Ronal Jr. (Veronica) of Ravenna. He is also survived by his nine grandchildren: Drew Harris, Brandon (Erica) Conner, Maggie (Joe) Monroe, Rachael (David) Carolan, Ian, Bailey, Jackson, Regan, and Riley Conner, and his great-granddaughter, Murphy, as well as his sister, Gayla Brent, and countless friends and extended family members.
Friends and family are invited to pay their respects during calling hours on Thursday, May 5, from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Newcomer Funeral Home, located at 131 N Canton Rd, Akron, OH 44305. A celebration of John Conner’s life will be held on Friday, May 6, at 11:00 am at the same location. John Conner’s life serves as an inspiration, reminding us of the profound impact one individual can have through service, dedication, and unwavering love for those around them.
