It’s exploring fatigue levels and the struggle to compartmentalize critical issues. This has been a fascinating psychological study of a man experiencing an exceptionally awful day. The sheer presence required for this exercise has kept me so focused that I haven’t even considered similarities or differences with ER.”

“I knew it was achievable because I directed at least one or two ER episodes without any music, no score whatsoever,” Gemmill, who served as an executive producer on ER from 1999 to 2007, shared. “It necessitates a specific writing approach, trusting in the inherent emotion of your scenes and actors. The emotional impact should derive from what the audience is seeing, not from being told how to feel through music cues, whether it’s a tense or even a humorous moment. I’ve worked on shows where I’ve implored composers to salvage scenes, to somehow improve them with music. But realistically, and particularly in the ER context, there’s no soundtrack when you receive bad news. There are no violins playing. This lack of score enhances the realism. Introducing a score immediately distances the viewer, making the experience less authentic. I believe the absence of a score significantly contributes to the show’s sense of reality.”
