JonBenet Ramsey Case: Boulder Police Department Continues Investigation

The disappearance of JonBenet Ramsey, a 6-year-old girl reported missing from her Boulder, Colorado home on December 26, 1996, remains a focal point of an ongoing investigation. Tragically, JonBenet Ramsey was later discovered deceased inside her residence, and an autopsy confirmed strangulation as the cause of death. This horrific event has spurred decades of investigative work and public interest.

Since the heartbreaking murder of JonBenet Ramsey, detectives have diligently pursued every viable lead, processing over 21,016 tips, letters, and emails. The investigation has extended across 19 states, involving interviews and discussions with more than 1,000 individuals connected to the case. The Boulder Police Department remains steadfast in its commitment to seeking justice for JonBenet Ramsey.

Boulder Police Chief Steve Redfearn emphasized the enduring impact of this tragedy, stating, “The killing of JonBenet was an unspeakable crime and this tragedy has never left our hearts. We are committed to following up on every lead and we are continuing to work with DNA experts and our law enforcement partners around the country until this tragic case is solved. This investigation will always be a priority for the Boulder Police Department.”

The JonBenet Ramsey case has undergone continuous review in collaboration with federal, state, and local agencies, alongside consultations with leading DNA experts nationwide. The Boulder Police Department’s collaborative efforts include partnerships with the FBI, the Boulder County District Attorney’s Office, Colorado’s Department of Public Safety, the Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI), and various external forensic laboratories. This extensive cooperation persists today, reflecting the unwavering dedication to resolving the JonBenet Ramsey mystery.

District Attorney Michael Dougherty acknowledged the persistent questions surrounding the case, stating, “The murder of JonBenet Ramsey is a terrible tragedy and sparked years of unanswered questions and theories. Our office has successfully prosecuted other cold case homicides and many murder cases. In every one of those cases, it was the evidence that proved the defendant(s) guilty. Whether it is DNA or other evidence, more is needed to solve this murder. I appreciate the collaboration with CBI, the FBI, and the Boulder Police Department.”
