Piedmont Columbus Regional has officially dedicated its Breast Care Center at the renowned John B. Amos Cancer Center to Elena Amos, renaming it the Elena Amos Breast Care Center. This significant change recognizes Elena Amos’s enduring dedication and profound impact on breast cancer treatment within the Columbus, Georgia region. Elena and her husband, John B. Amos, the founder of Aflac, have together established a remarkable legacy of healthcare excellence in Columbus, benefiting generations to come through their philanthropic efforts.
Driven by a deeply personal commitment, both Elena and John B. Amos shared a powerful vision: to ensure access to world-class cancer care for every individual in Columbus, regardless of their background or circumstances. Elena Amos specifically championed women’s health, paving the way for exceptional breast care services in the community. Her passion and advocacy have been instrumental in shaping the landscape of cancer treatment in the region.
“By dedicating the John B. Amos Cancer Center’s breast care facility to Mrs. Elena, our family hopes to unite Mr. John and Mrs. Elena’s legacies under one roof,” stated Wanda Amos, daughter-in-law of the late John and Elena Amos, highlighting the family’s intention to honor both their contributions jointly.
The Amos family’s commitment to the John B. Amos Cancer Center was further exemplified in 2019 when Wanda Amos and Dan Amos, nephew of Mr. Amos, spearheaded a successful Capital Campaign. Their leadership raised an impressive $15.8 million to fund the vital renovation and expansion of the John B. Amos Cancer Center. This expansion doubled the center’s capacity, enabling it to effectively address the increasing rates of cancer both locally and nationally. Furthermore, it allowed the center to better support the growing population of cancer survivors requiring ongoing care and services.
The Elena Amos Breast Care Center, within the John B. Amos Cancer Center, relocated in August 2019 to a significantly enhanced and comfortable space within the newly renovated facility. This co-location allows patients to conveniently access breast care specialists alongside Columbus’s leading oncologists, fostering a collaborative and comprehensive approach to cancer treatment. The Breast Care Center is a vital resource for the community, managing over 15,000 patient visits annually and attending to more than 60 women each day. This renaming formally acknowledges Elena Amos’s pivotal role in establishing and advancing breast cancer care within the John B. Amos Cancer Center, ensuring her legacy continues to inspire and support patients for years to come.
