RICHMOND, Va. (June 30, 2024) – Sixteen-time NHRA World Champion John Force, a legend in drag racing, is showing encouraging progress in his recovery after a harrowing 300 mile-per-hour Funny Car crash. Following five days of intense medical care and heavy sedation to manage injuries, Force has begun demonstrating daily improvements, according to his family who have been constantly present at the trauma hospital since Sunday.
Initially, John Force faced significant challenges due to a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). In the early stages of treatment, he struggled to respond to basic commands, such as opening his eyes, squeezing hands, or moving his limbs. While there were occasional slight movements, substantial progress remained elusive until his transfer from the trauma intensive care unit to the neuro intensive care unit on Wednesday. This move marked a turning point in his recovery journey.
Since being in the neuro ICU, Force has shown increasing consistency in responding to commands. A major breakthrough came on day five when he finally opened his eyes. After days of anxious waiting, his wife and daughters were deeply moved when he softly spoke his name, “John Force.” Moments later, when prompted, he gave a thumbs up, offering a powerful symbol of his improving condition.
One of the most significant hurdles in John Force’s recovery has been managing episodes of extreme agitation and confusion, causing him considerable distress. He has been actively trying to get out of bed, requiring restraints for his safety. Doctors have lightheartedly described his spirited nature as that of a “raging bull.” Despite this agitation, he has shown remarkable recognition, identifying his daughters and his wife, Laurie, and calling each of them by name. He also spoke the heartfelt words, “I love you,” further uplifting the spirits of his family. This consistent daily advancement has brought immense relief and hope to his loved ones.
Brittany Force, also a celebrated drag racer, has made the selfless decision to withdraw from this week’s 17th Summit Racing Equipment Nationals in Norwalk, Ohio. She is prioritizing family support and remaining by her father’s side during this critical time.
While these positive developments are greatly encouraging, it’s important to recognize that the 157-time tour winner still has a long and challenging road to full recovery. John Force will remain in neuro intensive care for the foreseeable future, with visitation limited to immediate family to ensure a focused and restful healing environment.
John Force’s family expresses profound gratitude to the dedicated medical professionals who are instrumental in his care and recovery. They are also deeply thankful for the overwhelming outpouring of heartfelt messages, prayers, support, and concern from the global automotive and racing communities. The family extends their appreciation to sponsors, fans, and the media for their understanding and respect for the privacy of the Force family and the John Force Racing team during this sensitive period.
