Professional golf icon John Daly has announced he has been diagnosed with bladder cancer. In a recent interview with the Golf Channel, Daly revealed that he sought medical attention for back pain, which ultimately led to the diagnosis.
Daly, known for his powerful drives and charismatic personality, shared the news with candor, stating that doctors have informed him of a significant chance of recurrence. “There’s an 85 percent chance it comes back,” Daly stated, highlighting the uncertain prognosis despite initial successful treatment. This reality is unfortunately common with bladder cancer, which has one of the highest recurrence rates among all cancers, making it a costly disease to manage over time.
Andrea Maddox-Smith, CEO of the Bladder Cancer Advocacy Network (BCAN), expressed support for Daly, stating, “Our thoughts are with Mr. Daly and his loved ones during this very difficult time. It is unfortunately true that bladder cancer will often recur.” Daly himself acknowledged this uncertainty, commenting, “It’s probably going to come back, and then another three months that you don’t know. You just don’t know.”
Bladder cancer is a prevalent yet often overlooked cancer in the United States. While it is among the most common cancers, public awareness and understanding remain low. Key indicators of bladder cancer include blood in the urine, as well as increased frequency and urgency in urination. Maddox-Smith emphasized the importance of early detection, adding, “Bladder cancer can be highly treatable when caught in its early stages and we hope and pray that this is the case with Mr. Daly.”
The Bladder Cancer Advocacy Network (BCAN) is dedicated to increasing public awareness about this disease, driving advancements in bladder cancer research, and providing crucial education and support to those affected by bladder cancer and their families.
