Big John’s Tavern: Charleston’s Beloved Citadel Hangout Reopens with a Sophisticated Twist

After a hiatus since 2020, Charleston’s iconic Big John’s Tavern has made a triumphant return, breathing new life into 251 East Bay Street. Three Citadel alumni, Christopher Houston, Scotty Sheriff, and Darren Bradley, have lovingly resurrected this cherished establishment, transforming the former Cane Rhum Bar & Caribbean Kitchen space back into Big John’s Tavern. Driven by nostalgia and a desire to revive a piece of Charleston history, the trio acquired the building after noticing Cane’s departure and embarked on an 18-month renovation journey to recapture the spirit of the original Big John’s.

A Charleston Classic Reborn: Honoring Big John’s Legacy

Originally established in 1955, Big John’s Tavern quickly became synonymous with Citadel cadets and Charleston locals alike. Legend has it that the eponymous owner, John Canady, affectionately known as “Big John,” fostered a relaxed atmosphere, even turning a blind eye to underage cadets enjoying a beer or two, as long as they remained well-behaved. This legendary leniency cemented Big John’s Tavern as the quintessential Citadel hangout for decades, until its unfortunate closure in 2015 due to fire damage.

The new custodians of Big John’s Tavern are deeply respectful of this rich history. While embracing the tavern’s dive bar roots, they have infused a touch of modern sophistication into the space. The iconic red leather bar stools, a hallmark of the original Big John’s, have been lovingly restored and returned to their rightful place. However, some of the more overtly “dive-y” elements, such as the dusty posters and ceiling-dangling bras, have been respectfully retired, paving the way for a slightly more refined ambiance.

Scotty Doesn’t Know: Unveiling a Hidden Speakeasy

Adding a unique and contemporary layer to the Big John’s Tavern experience is “Scotty Doesn’t Know,” an intimate speakeasy discreetly tucked away in the building’s former pool room. Inspired by co-owner Scotty Sheriff’s appreciation for hidden cocktail bars around the globe, this clandestine space offers a contrasting atmosphere to the lively tavern. The name itself, “Scotty Doesn’t Know,” is a playful nod to the New York speakeasy Please Don’t Tell and the catchy, irreverent song from the movie EuroTrip.

Access to Scotty Doesn’t Know is through a movable bookcase, adding to the speakeasy’s allure of secrecy and exclusivity. Set to open later this fall and operating on a reservation-only basis, this hidden gem is envisioned as a haven for quieter conversations and more intimate gatherings. Patrons within Scotty Doesn’t Know can effortlessly summon refills by simply pressing a button on the wall, signaling the bartenders in Big John’s Tavern to prepare the next round of wine, beer, or expertly crafted cocktails. This secluded space promises to be the perfect destination for a date night or a sophisticated escape from the more boisterous energy of the main bar area.

Elevated Fare and Drinks: A Modern Tavern Experience

Big John’s Tavern is not just about nostalgia and atmosphere; the offerings have also been elevated to meet modern palates. The dedicated cocktail menu boasts inventive concoctions like the “Smoke Show,” a visually impressive drink served in a smoke-filled bottle, alongside classics such as the Four Roses Old Fashioned. The beer selection predominantly features local brews, celebrating the Charleston craft beer scene. The wine list is equally impressive, offering a global array of varietals, including three sparkling wine options available by the glass.

The food menu is curated by executive chef William Sherrod, formerly of Fleet Landing, bringing a refined culinary touch to the tavern fare. Moving beyond typical bar snacks, the menu presents a selection of thoughtfully crafted plates. Diners can indulge in dishes like Steak Diane with gnocchi, fresh local catch served with savory bread pudding, and a sophisticated take on the chicken cordon bleu sandwich. Chef Sherrod, hailing from Augusta, Georgia, draws inspiration from Southern culinary traditions, evident in dishes like his fried green tomato bruschetta with shrimp and pimento cheese, and the flavorful Gullah hot chicken. This commitment to quality food and drink ensures that Big John’s Tavern offers a complete and elevated tavern experience.
