John R. Barber, affectionately remembered by many as “Barber Johns,” passed away unexpectedly on July 22, 2022, at the age of 65. Born on December 4, 1956, in Akron, Ohio, John was the son of Hobert and Hazel {Thrasher} Barber, both of whom preceded him in death.
Growing up in Goodyear Heights, John spent his formative years before becoming a dedicated student and resident of Tallmadge. In recent times, he found a new home in Windham Township.
John’s absence will be deeply felt by his son, Shane Barber, and Shane’s fiancée, Sherri. He also leaves behind his cherished grandson, Dylan Barber, and his loyal canine companion, Daisy. His older sister, Bea Newman, and younger sister, Bev (Clyde) Ball – a relationship he often joked about – along with numerous nieces, nephews, vending company associates, and a wide circle of friends will dearly miss him.
Known for his exceptional mental math abilities and quick-witted humor, John embraced life with enthusiasm. He found enjoyment and success in the vending machine industry, the excitement of casinos, and the thrill of stock car and derby car racing. His houseboat on Dale Hollow Lake provided a tranquil escape, and he proudly owned The Grotto Restaurant. Relaxation could often be found at his Kentucky farm, and a simple daily pleasure was his visits to McDonald’s with Daisy for her cheeseburger Happy Meal.
In accordance with John’s wishes, cremation has taken place. His ashes will be scattered in local areas and also in Kentucky, a state that held a special place in his heart. His chosen epitaph, “A LITTLE BIT OF JOHN GOES A LONG WAY,” perfectly encapsulates his impactful presence.
The family invites friends and acquaintances to a celebration of John’s life at the Akron Turner Club, located at 547 Munroe Falls Rd., Tallmadge, OH 44278, on August 20th, from 1:00 PM to 7:00 PM. Attendees are encouraged to share their memories and humorous anecdotes of John.
For those wishing to honor John’s memory through charitable contributions, donations can be made to the Humane Society of Summit County and Haven for Pets of Summit County. John held a deep commitment to the care and rescue of animals.
John R. Barber, a beloved individual known for his humor and kindness.
“We thought of you today
but that is nothing new
We thought of you yesterday
And will tomorrow, too
We think of you in silence
And make no outward show
For what it meant to lost you
Only those who love you know
Remembering you is easy
We do it every day
It’s the heartache of losing you
That will never go away”
