John Walsh Clinches Denver District Attorney Victory Over Leora Joseph

Denver is poised to welcome John Walsh as its next District Attorney after he secured a decisive win against Democratic opponent Leora Joseph in the primary race. The election, held on Tuesday, saw Walsh garnering significant voter support, paving his way to becoming Denver’s top prosecutor.

As of 10 p.m. on Tuesday, with the majority of ballots counted, John Walsh had received 39,904 votes, representing 58.23% of the total 68,527 votes cast. Leora Joseph, while running a competitive campaign, conceded the race, having received 28,623 votes, or 41.77%. With no Republican challengers in the general election, Walsh’s victory in the Democratic primary effectively ensures his ascension to the District Attorney’s office in Denver.

Leora Joseph acknowledged the results and extended her congratulations to Walsh. “I congratulate John Walsh on his victory,” Joseph stated, expressing confidence in his leadership. Joseph, who previously served as chief deputy district attorney in the 18th Judicial District, brought her extensive experience to the race but ultimately fell short against Walsh’s strong campaign.

John Walsh, a former U.S. Attorney for Colorado, brings a wealth of experience to the role of Denver District Attorney. Prior to his tenure as U.S. Attorney, a position he held for six years before returning to private practice in 2016, Walsh spent 15 years in private practice in Colorado and also worked as a prosecutor in California. His background provides a robust foundation for leading Denver’s prosecution efforts.

The District Attorney is Denver’s paramount law enforcement figure, wielding significant influence over the city’s criminal justice policies and prosecution strategies. Walsh is set to succeed Beth McCann, the current District Attorney who has served two terms and is now stepping down. Walsh will assume office in January for a four-year term, barring any unforeseen circumstances in the November general election.

During a debate earlier in June, John Walsh outlined his primary objectives for Denver. Addressing violent crime, particularly among young people, emerged as his top priority. He also emphasized his commitment to enhancing public safety in downtown Denver and strengthening the city’s police force. These priorities resonated with voters and underscored his campaign.

In other District Attorney primary races across Colorado, George Brauchler established a commanding lead in the newly formed 23rd Judicial District, while incumbent Michael Allen led in early returns in El Paso County’s Fourth Judicial District. These results highlight an active primary election cycle for prosecutorial roles throughout the state.

John Walsh’s victory over Leora Joseph marks a significant transition for Denver’s legal landscape. As he prepares to take office, his focus on crime reduction and public safety will be closely watched by Denver residents and stakeholders alike.
