For over a century, the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB Health) in Galveston has been a cornerstone of healthcare in Texas. Central to this institution is the John Sealy Hospital, a name synonymous with quality patient care and medical advancement.
The current John Sealy Hospital, completed in 1978, represents the third iteration of this vital facility, thanks to the generous support of The Sealy & Smith Foundation. This 12-story building, funded entirely by a $32.5 million grant from the foundation, was designed with patient comfort and specialized care in mind, featuring single-patient rooms and dedicated units. It stands as a testament to the legacy of John Sealy, the original benefactor whose vision led to the construction of the first John Sealy Hospital in 1890. Visitors to the hospital lobby are greeted by portraits honoring John Sealy, his son John Sealy II, and daughter, Jennie Sealy Smith, figures deeply intertwined with the hospital’s history.
The second John Sealy Hospital, dating back to 1954, continues to serve UTMB Health today as the John Sealy Annex. Connected to the north side of the modern hospital, this recognizable structure now houses essential administrative and support services, playing a crucial role in the smooth operation of the medical branch.
The Sealy & Smith Foundation’s impact on UTMB extends far beyond the John Sealy Hospital buildings. With contributions exceeding $850 million since its inception, the foundation’s philanthropic efforts have profoundly shaped the university’s growth and its ability to serve the health needs of Texas.
Continuing this legacy of giving, the Jennie Sealy Hospital, a newer facility on the Galveston campus, further exemplifies UTMB Health’s commitment to exceptional patient care. Also supported by the Sealy & Smith Foundation, the Jennie Sealy Hospital enhances the medical environment for both patients and healthcare professionals, providing a state-of-the-art setting conducive to healing and learning. This $438 million facility, opened in 2016, boasts 310 patient rooms, including 60 ICU beds, advanced operating suites, and a dedicated day surgery unit. It is also connected to UTMB’s Clinical Services Wing, housing essential support services like the pharmacy and laboratories.
With the opening of the Jennie Sealy Hospital, modernization efforts shifted back to the John Sealy Hospital, marking the second phase of a major upgrade. Today, John Sealy Hospital remains a critical component of UTMB Health, housing renowned specialized units such as the Blocker Burn Unit, the Mother & Baby and Labor & Delivery Units, and the Children’s Hospital. It also provides essential services like the Sleep Lab and the main cafeteria, ensuring comprehensive care for the Galveston community and beyond.
