John Joseph Leary, a beloved husband, brother, and educator, passed away peacefully in Geneva, IL on Thursday, October 24th, 2024, at the age of 81. Born on July 30th, 1943, in Chicago, IL, to Irish immigrants Bridget and John O’Leary, John Joseph Leary lived a life marked by dedication to his students, devotion to his faith, and unwavering integrity.
John Joseph Leary’s journey began in Chicago and led him to Iona College outside of New York City, founded by the Christian Brothers. There, he earned his Bachelor’s degree and witnessed a memorable address by Robert Kennedy in 1964, an event that remained vivid in his memory throughout his life. His passion for education led him to become a high school English teacher, notably at Bowen High School in Chicago for many years. Beyond the classroom, John Joseph Leary enthusiastically coached chess, soccer, and other sports, impacting countless young lives. Later in life, he pursued and achieved a Master’s degree in Counseling, further demonstrating his commitment to helping others.
Literature, especially the works of Shakespeare, held a special place in John Joseph Leary’s heart. He was deeply religious, guided by a strong ethical compass and a profound sense of fairness. Those who knew him will remember John Joseph Leary as a man of exceptional integrity. He actively participated in his parish men’s group and served as an election judge in St. Charles for many years, contributing to his community in various ways. Together with his wife, Joan Crean, whom he married on July 16th, 1986, John Joseph Leary shared a love for travel, including four cherished trips to Ireland. John and Joan built their life together in St. Charles, IL, moving from Chicago in 1989 to a home they created.
John Joseph Leary is survived by his loving spouse, Joan; his sisters Marie Kielty, Theresa (Bill) Churilla, and Catherine O’Leary; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister Jane Fleck.
A Funeral Mass celebrating the life of John Joseph Leary will be held on Saturday, November 2, 2024, at 10:30 A.M. at St. John Neumann Catholic Church, 2900 E. Main St, St. Charles, IL 60174, officiated by Fr. Paul White. Burial will follow at Union Cemetery in St. Charles. Prior to the service, visitation will take place on Friday, November 1, 2024, from 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. at Yurs Funeral Home, 405 E. Main Street, St. Charles, IL 60174.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made in memory of John Joseph Leary to Leo Catholic High School in Chicago, an institution reflecting his dedication to Catholic education and the city he loved.
