Born on May 9, 1961, as John Joseph Corbett in Wheeling, West Virginia, to Sandra (Pavilack) and John Marshall Corbett, his diverse heritage includes English, Irish, Lithuanian, and Russian-Jewish roots. Raised in a Catholic household, he graduated from Wheeling Central Catholic High School in 1979. Before embarking on his acting journey, Corbett spent six years working at a boiler-making factory in California. An injury led him to a career change, and he enrolled at Cerritos College in Norwalk, California, to study hairdressing, while simultaneously exploring his passion for acting through evening classes.

Corbett’s foray into acting began with a guest appearance in The Wonder Years in 1988. His breakthrough arrived just two years later when he landed the role of Chris Stevens in Northern Exposure. This role not only catapulted him to fame but also earned him Primetime Emmy Award, Golden Globe Award, and Screen Actors Guild Award nominations, recognizing his exceptional portrayal of the charismatic radio DJ. His early success was further solidified with a Saturn Award nomination for Best Actor for his lead role in The Visitor in 1997.

His portrayal of Aidan Shaw, one of Sarah Jessica Parker’s love interests in Sex and the City, further cemented his status as a versatile and sought-after actor. This role brought him his second Golden Globe Award nomination, highlighting his ability to connect with audiences in both comedic and dramatic roles.

In 2002, Corbett achieved blockbuster success in the romantic comedy My Big Fat Greek Wedding, starring opposite Nia Vardalos. His charming performance as the male lead contributed to the film’s widespread appeal, and he reprised this iconic role in the sequel, My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2, in 2016. Beyond romantic comedies, Corbett showcased his range in United States of Tara (2009), where he played Toni Collette’s husband, and in Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll (2015), embodying guitarist Josiah ‘Flash’ Bacon.
