Remembering John Young: A Life Well-Lived in Freer, TX and Houma, LA

John Edward Young Sr., affectionately known as “the Legend on Bayou Decade” and “Papa John” to his grandchildren, passed away on Saturday, August 31, 2024, at the age of 71. Born in Freer, Texas, John Young spent his life as a resident of Houma, Louisiana, leaving a lasting impact on his community and all who knew him.

Friends and family are invited to pay their respects at Chauvin Funeral Home on Saturday, September 7, 2024. Visitation will be held from 9:00 am until the Ministry Service begins at 1:00 pm at Chauvin Funeral Home. Burial services will be held at a later date to honor the life of John Young.

John Young’s Legacy: Family, Craftsmanship, and Friendship

John Young is survived by his beloved wife of 52 years, Lorie Babin Young, who stood by his side throughout his life’s journey. He was a devoted father to his children, John Young Jr. (Mitsie) and Ryan Young. His sisters, Gail Stoddard, Della Toups, Nancy Traylor, and Robin Nguyen, will fondly remember their brother. “Papa John” cherished his grandchildren: Trey, Tyler, Emma, Ella, Allie, and Greyson, and held a special place in his heart for his godchild, Kellie, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Marion ‘Mo’ and Dorothy Ross Young, and his grandson, Lane Young, whom he undoubtedly held dear in memory.

John Young built a respected career as a Pipeline Welder and Fabricator, demonstrating expertise and dedication in his trade. Later in his career, he became a Certified Pipeline Inspector, showcasing his commitment to excellence and safety in his field. His skills extended beyond welding, as he was known to be gifted in many trades, a testament to his resourceful and hardworking nature.

Beyond his professional life, John Young was passionate about the outdoors. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, finding solace and enjoyment in nature. His membership in the Dularge Hunting Club further solidified his connection to this community of like-minded individuals.

More than his professional accomplishments or hobbies, John Young will be remembered for his character and the way he treated others. He was a true friend to many, the kind of person people could rely on without question. John Young had a remarkable ability to connect with people; he never met a stranger and genuinely enjoyed engaging in conversation with everyone he encountered.

Known for his generous spirit, John Young was always ready to lend a helping hand, even offering the shirt off his back to those in need. He possessed a heart of gold, earning him the deep affection and close friendship of countless individuals. “The Legend,” John Young, may be gone, but his spirit of kindness, friendship, and unwavering generosity will continue to live on in the hearts and memories of all who were fortunate enough to know him.
