JonBenet Ramsey Case: Boulder Police Reaffirm Commitment to Unsolved 1996 Murder Investigation

The disappearance of six-year-old JonBenet Ramsey from her Boulder, Colorado home on December 26, 1996, marked the beginning of a tragedy that continues to resonate. Reported missing from her residence on the 700 block of 15th Street, JonBenet Ramsey was tragically found deceased within the same house. A subsequent autopsy revealed the young girl’s death was caused by strangulation.

In the years following the heartbreaking murder of JonBenet Ramsey, the Boulder Police Department has relentlessly pursued every possible avenue to solve this case. Detectives have diligently followed up on over 21,016 tips, letters, and emails received, demonstrating their unwavering commitment. The investigation has extended across state lines, with law enforcement traveling to 19 states to conduct interviews and speak with more than 1,000 individuals potentially connected to the crime.

The JonBenet Ramsey case has been under constant scrutiny and review, involving collaborative efforts with federal, state, and local agencies. The Boulder Police Department has actively sought and maintained regular consultation with numerous stakeholders throughout the country, including the FBI, the Boulder County District Attorney’s Office, the Colorado Department of Public Safety, the Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI), and various external forensic laboratories. This collaborative approach remains integral to the ongoing investigation.

Boulder County District Attorney Michael Dougherty commented, “The murder of JonBenet Ramsey is an unimaginable tragedy that has generated years of unanswered questions and numerous theories. Our office has a proven track record of successfully prosecuting cold case homicides and various murder cases. In each of these successful prosecutions, evidence was the critical component in proving the defendant(s) guilty. Whether it involves advancements in DNA technology or other forms of evidence, further evidentiary developments are necessary to solve this murder.
