Belmont University has named Dr. John Delony as its new Associate Provost and Dean of Students, effective May 1, following a comprehensive nationwide search. Dr. Delony, currently the Associate Academic Dean for Student Life at Texas Tech University School of Law, brings a wealth of experience and a strong commitment to student-centered education to his new role.
In his capacity as Associate Provost and Dean of Students, John Delony will be Belmont’s chief student affairs officer. He will collaborate closely with the Provost to cultivate and maintain a thriving living-learning environment focused on students. His responsibilities include overseeing a diverse division of over 50 professional staff members across various student service areas. These areas encompass Residence Life, Health, Counseling, and Support Services, Fitness and Recreation, Multicultural Learning & Experience, and Student Activities, among others, ensuring a holistic approach to student development and well-being.
Dr. Thomas Burns, Provost of Belmont University, expressed his enthusiasm for the appointment, stating, “This is a demanding position, and we set the bar exceedingly high for our next chief student affairs officer. In every conversation John Delony demonstrated the valuable expertise, compassionate care and contagious enthusiasm that he will bring to this position. John Delony himself shared his excitement about joining Belmont, noting, “Belmont is a unique and very special place. Dr. Delony’s extensive academic background includes a doctorate in higher education administration from Texas Tech University. He is currently completing a second doctorate in counselor education and supervision, further demonstrating his dedication to student support and well-being. In 2013, he completed the prestigious Higher Education Management Development Program at Harvard University’s Graduate School of Education. He also holds a master’s in higher education administration from Texas Tech and a bachelor’s in humanities/psychology from Lubbock Christian University, providing a robust foundation for his leadership role.
During his tenure at Texas Tech School of Law, John Delony served as Dean of Students and liaison to the University Campus Life Office. He chaired the Student Support and Emergency Team, contributed to strategic planning, advised the Student Bar Association, and participated in numerous committees. His contributions were recognized with awards such as the Texas Tech University Distinguished Staff Member Matador Award, the Student Bar Association Life Changer Award, and the Award of Excellence from the Black Law Students Association, underscoring his effective leadership and positive impact on the Texas Tech community.
Prior to his role at Texas Tech, John Delony held student affairs positions at Abilene Christian University and Lubbock Christian University. He is a certified Civil Rights/Title IX Investigator and holds certifications in Critical Incident Stress Management and Behavioral Intervention Team Best Practices. Throughout his career, Dr. Delony has also enriched the academic community by teaching graduate and undergraduate courses in higher education, counseling, and organizational leadership, showcasing his commitment to education and professional development within the field.
