Drying Speed: Quick-Drying Base Layers
We assess and report on drying speed for several reasons. Firstly, many materials used in long johns cannot be machine-dried. Wool can shrink, lose shape, and shed fibers in the dryer. Even 100% Merino wool and most synthetics often incorporate elastane in the waistband and fabric, which can degrade with machine drying. We recommend line-drying or laying long johns flat to dry. Secondly, line-drying speed can indicate how quickly the long johns will dry when worn, which is related to breathability.
Lighter-weight fabrics generally dry faster than heavier fabrics, regardless of material. The WEERTI Thermal Fleece Lined Set and Thermajohn Thermal Fleece Lined Set dried exceptionally quickly due to their lightweight synthetic construction. However, we observed some pilling in both, suggesting line-drying is preferable to machine drying.
Surprisingly, some heavier long johns also dry relatively quickly. The Icebreaker Merino 200 Oasis Bottoms demonstrated impressive drying speed for their weight, as did the 3/4 length Ortovox 185 Rock’N’Wool Short Pant. The Patagonia Capilene Midweight, our fastest-drying synthetic option, and the lightweight Artilect Boulder 125 and Mons Royale Cascade Merino Flex Legging also dried quickly due to their overall lighter weight.
