A few months ago, I, John K, received an exciting proposition from a Japanese clothing line. They were interested in featuring my illustrations on a range of shirts and displaying some of my original artwork at their store in Japan. This incredible opportunity led to a fantastic trip and a heartwarming experience connecting with fans in Tokyo.

The Art Meets Apparel: John K’s Designs for Japanese Fashion
The collaboration kicked off with illustrating designs that would be printed on t-shirts. It’s always a thrill to see my artwork take on new forms, and apparel is a fun and accessible canvas. Seeing the initial designs come to life was already exciting, but I knew the best was yet to come with the planned launch event in Tokyo.

Meeting the Fans: A Packed Event in Tokyo
The highlight of the trip was undoubtedly the special meet and greet event on March 28, 2023. I was invited to the Journal Standard store in Omotesando, Tokyo, and was genuinely surprised by the incredible turnout. It was heartwarming to witness firsthand how many Japanese fans still cherish Ren and Stimpy and my other work. The event was scheduled for three hours, and it was packed for the entire duration!
What was particularly inspiring was meeting so many talented cartoonists among the fans. Some of them were incredibly skilled, and their enthusiasm for animation was infectious.
Discovering Young Talent: Inspired by Fan Art
One young artist, a 16-year-old named Uni, especially impressed me. He spoke fluent English and was bursting with passion for animation. He even showed me two pages of his artwork, and his drawing ability at that age is far beyond where I was at 16! I have no doubt he has a bright future in animation. You can see more of his work on his social media: @uni1015m.

Another cartoonist I had the pleasure of meeting was Rurumu. She was a dedicated Ren and Stimpy fan and brought an entire suitcase filled with her collection of merchandise!

Rurumu also shared an incredible diorama she had created, recreating the opening scene from Stimpy’s Invention. She sculpted the Ren and Stimpy figures, along with the iconic mounted fish, and built the entire room around them. The level of detail and craftsmanship was truly amazing.

Mina, another talented attendee, brought a sketchbook filled with her cartoon creations. She even gifted me a design for a holographic card, which was incredibly thoughtful and creative.

Lisa, a long-time fan, showed up wearing an original Ren and Stimpy t-shirt from the early 90s! It was amazing to see such vintage memorabilia and to know the show still resonates with people after all these years.

I also met another cartoonist who goes by the name OPMM. He had brought along some of his exhibition pieces to show.

Studio Visit and Toy Treasures at Odd Job Animation
During my time in Tokyo, I also had the pleasure of visiting Odd Job animation studio. They generously gave me a tour of their facilities and proudly showed off their impressive collection of vintage toys. As a fellow animation enthusiast and toy collector, I felt right at home!
