John Bartlett: The American Fashion Icon and Advocate for Animal Welfare

Born and raised in Ohio, John Bartlett’s journey into the world of high fashion is a testament to his talent and dedication. A graduate of both Harvard University and the prestigious Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT), Bartlett honed his skills working for renowned designers Willi Smith and Ronaldus Shamask before establishing his eponymous label, John Bartlett collection, in 1991. Bartlett’s creative vision and leadership have been sought after by major brands. He served as Creative Director for Liz Claiborne, spearheading its rebranding as Claiborne by John Bartlett. His expertise also extended to Ghurka, known for its luxury leather goods, and the Italian fashion powerhouse Byblos. John Bartlett’s designs have graced runways not only at New York Fashion Week but also on the international stage in fashion capitals like Milan, Florence, and Tokyo, showcasing his global influence in the fashion world.

The essence of John Bartlett’s signature style is rooted in a rugged American authenticity, a quality that has garnered him significant industry recognition. He has been honored with two prestigious CFDA Fashion Awards, first the Perry Ellis Menswear Award for emerging talent in 1993, and later the Menswear Designer of the Year award in 1997. Further solidifying his impact, in 2010, the American Apparel and Footwear Association (AAFA) named John Bartlett their Designer of the Year, recognizing his enduring contributions to the fashion landscape.

Continuing his innovative approach, Bartlett achieved another milestone by winning the 2011 CFDA/Lexus Eco-Fashion Challenge. He then made fashion history at New York Fashion Week in February 2012 with the debut of the first-ever eco-luxe, completely cruelty-free menswear collection. This groundbreaking collection underscored John Bartlett’s commitment to sustainable and ethical fashion practices.

Beyond his fashion accomplishments, John Bartlett is a passionate and long-standing advocate for animal rights and welfare. He has collaborated with leading animal welfare organizations including the Humane Society of the United States, Farm Sanctuary, PETA, the North Shore Animal League, and Dogs Deserve Better. His beloved three-legged rescue dog, Tiny Tim, serves as the iconic logo for all of his collections, symbolizing his deep connection to animal rescue. In 2012, John Bartlett officially launched the Tiny Tim Rescue Fund, a nonprofit 501(c)3 organization. The fund is dedicated to supporting independent rescue groups across the country. These groups are crucial in advocating for homeless dogs and helping them find permanent homes. The Tiny Tim Rescue Fund provides vital assistance to these groups, covering medical expenses, transportation costs, training programs, and temporary boarding, making a tangible difference in the lives of rescued animals.

Building upon his extensive industry experience, John Bartlett has transitioned into higher education, shaping the next generation of fashion professionals. After three years as Director of Fashion at Marist College, he was appointed Director of Fashion for Executive and Professional Studies at the prestigious Parsons School of Design/The New School in New York City.
