John J. Connolly, a longtime resident of Walpole, Massachusetts, and formerly of Dorchester, passed away peacefully at his home on November 14, 2011, at the age of 84. Surrounded by his loving family, his passing came after a courageous battle with cancer. John J. Connolly’s life was marked by dedication to his family, his country, and his career.
John J. Connolly was the beloved husband for 50 years of the late Mary E. (Brennan) Connolly. He was a loving father to John M. Connolly (and his wife Eleanor) of Canton, Patricia A. Oakley (and her husband Terrence) of Montgomery Village, Maryland, Rita M. Connolly of Walpole, and James M. Connolly (and his wife Stacy) of Walpole. His legacy continues through his cherished grandchildren: Michaela Oakley, Terrence “Bud” Oakley, Kate Connolly, Kayla Connolly, and Keri Connolly. He was also the brother of Bridget A. McIntyre of Melrose and Martin F. Connolly (and his wife Judith) of Quincy, and is survived by several nieces and nephews. John was predeceased by his parents, Martin and Bridget (Nee) Connolly.
A proud patriot, John J. Connolly served his country in the United States Army during World War II and in Korea. His commitment to service extended beyond the military; he graduated from Northeastern University in 1960 and dedicated over 40 years of his professional life to the US Navy and the US Customs Service.
In his retirement, John J. Connolly embraced life’s simple pleasures. He found joy in traveling, golfing, and playing horseshoes. Above all, he treasured spending time with his family. A passionate Boston sports fan, he enthusiastically followed his favorite teams.
Funeral services for John J. Connolly will be held from the James H. Delaney & Son Funeral Home, 48 Common Street, Walpole, on Friday, November 18, 2011, at 9:00 AM, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at Blessed Sacrament Church, East Street (Route 27) at Diamond Street, Walpole at 10:00 AM. Relatives and friends are warmly invited to attend visiting hours on Thursday, November 17, 2011, from 4pm to 8pm. Interment will be in Saint Francis Cemetery, Walpole. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in John J. Connolly’s name may be made to the Walpole Senior Center, 135 School St, Walpole, MA 02081.
