Remembering John Kaczynski: A Life of Dedication and Community in Milwaukee

Thomas John Kaczynski, fondly known as “Pa K” and remembered by many simply as John Kaczynski, passed away peacefully on January 16, 2017, at the age of 70 in Arizona. A recent snowbird homeowner, John Kaczynski was a long-time resident of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and a pillar of his community. Born on January 27, 1946, to Sigmund and Regina Kaczynski, John Kaczynski’s life was marked by service, family, and a passion for sports.

John Kaczynski was a devoted brother to Nancy Zakrzewski (late David) and a loving father to Lori (John) Hoch, Craig (Jackie) Kaczynski, Brian Kaczynski, and Jeff (Sayuri) Kaczynski. His family was central to his life, and he took immense pride in his six grandchildren: Maddie (15), Katie (15), Justin (10), Max (5), Arya (5), and Claire (2). He was a constant presence at their sporting events, and his absence will be deeply felt in the stands. John Kaczynski also leaves behind his cherished friend, Julie Kampa.

For over three decades, John Kaczynski dedicated his professional life to Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS) as a guidance counselor and teacher. His commitment to education extended beyond the classroom, as he served as a scorer and timer for numerous MPS high school basketball and baseball games. His passion for sports reached the collegiate level, where he contributed to University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM) Men’s and Women’s basketball.

Beyond his professional and family life, John Kaczynski was deeply involved in community sports. A long-time member of the Wilson Park Little League Board and coach, he dedicated countless summers to the fields, tirelessly promoting the league and mentoring young athletes. His commitment to youth sports continued with St. Roman School athletics, where he volunteered as a basketball and soccer coach, and was a fervent supporter, affectionately known as the “Gladiator.” Although his own children never played in the new St. Roman gym, he was proud to watch his grandchildren compete there, a testament to his over 20 years of involvement with St. Roman athletics. John Kaczynski was a faithful member of St. Roman Parish throughout his life.

In his leisure time, John Kaczynski was an avid golfer. He relished his time on the green, playing as often as possible and even crafting his own clubs. He worked as a starter at Oakwood Golf Course, where he enjoyed his early morning shifts, greeting the regular players.

A funeral service to celebrate the life of John Kaczynski will be held on Thursday, January 26, 2017, at St. Roman Parish (1810 W. Bolivar). Visitation will take place at the church from 3:30 PM to 5:45 PM, followed by a Funeral Mass at 6:00 PM, with a reception at the Polish Center afterwards. All are welcome to attend and celebrate John Kaczynski’s life. Those wishing to make a memorial donation are encouraged to consider Wilson Park Little League, in honor of John Kaczynski’s enduring contribution to the community.
