John Edwards Psychic Medium: Questioning the Reality of “Crossing Over”

Five years ago, this website published a critical piece about John Edward, the personality behind the TV show Crossing Over, known for his “psychic readings.” The crux of the criticism? Edward made a living by charging people to purportedly communicate with deceased individuals – a concept many find dubious. It’s a business model built on the premise of talking to dead people, and surprisingly, people pay for it.

John Edward, the “Crossing Over” psychic medium, announces his return to Australia, sparking skepticism.

Back in 2014, ahead of an Australian tour, John Edwards, the self-proclaimed “psychic medium,” engaged with the Herald. Ironically, as previously noted, he seemed to cast doubt on other spiritual mediums, implying a hierarchy within the profession. He subtly suggested that while others might be charlatans, he, John Edward, possessed genuine abilities to connect with the afterlife and provide insights into the well-being of the departed – invariably reporting positive updates from the spirit world.

Now, as another tour approaches, Edward has chosen The Daily Telegraph to disseminate his message. Interestingly, the message remains consistent: beware of psychic con artists.

“You should go by word of mouth,” Edward advised. “Just because somebody has written a book or been on radio or TV, doesn’t mean that they are that good or that their intentions are pure.”

This statement from John Edwards, a figure synonymous with televised psychic readings, raises questions. Is he suggesting that only genuinely gifted psychics, like himself, are trustworthy? It’s a curious stance, seemingly advocating for discerning consumers in the psychic marketplace, while simultaneously operating within it.

Expanding on his practice, Edward attempts to reframe his “psychic readings” beyond mere entertainment. “I don’t see it as being a show or a performance,” he explains. “It is about me teaching people that are in front of me about energy, about how folks that have crossed over are still part of their lives but also about how to navigate the world of energy that they are living in.”

This explanation offers a more esoteric justification for his work. Instead of simply “talking to dead people,” John Edward positions himself as an educator, guiding individuals through the unseen “world of energy” and their ongoing connection with those who have “crossed over.” However, this rebranding doesn’t fully address the fundamental skepticism surrounding the core claim: the ability to communicate with the deceased. The question remains whether audiences are paying for genuine spiritual insight or skillfully presented, albeit comforting, pronouncements.
