John M. DeLuca, a resident of Thornton, PA, passed away peacefully on September 2, 2021, at the age of 79, after a courageous battle with ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis). Born in Mount Pleasant, PA, on [Birthdate not provided in original text, can leave out or research if possible], John was the youngest son of the late Carl and Grace DeLuca. His life was marked by dedication to education, a passion for history, and deep love for his family and community.
Mr. DeLuca was a devoted husband to his wife Patricia of 44 years, and a loving father to his children, Beth McCarry (James) and Michael Deluca (Colleen). His grandchildren, Grace and Sarah, brought immense joy to his life. He is also survived by his sister, Agnes Lipko (Andrew), and brother, Carl Deluca (Bonnie). John was predeceased by his sister, Patricia Labuda, and brother Michael Deluca. He will be fondly remembered by numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.
John Deluca’s commitment to education was evident throughout his distinguished 42-year career at Upper Darby School District. After earning his BS Ed. from California State and M. Ed degrees from both Temple University and Villanova University, he dedicated himself to shaping young minds. Throughout his tenure, John taught a variety of subjects, but his true passion lay in US History. He often shared his philosophy, “if you teach your hobby, you will never work a day in your life,” a testament to his genuine love for his profession. His impact on countless students within the Upper Darby community remains a significant part of his legacy.
Beyond the classroom, John DeLuca was a true history aficionado. He was an avid reader, finding joy in exploring the past through books. Stamp collecting was another cherished hobby, reflecting his meticulous nature and appreciation for detail. John also enjoyed traveling, particularly to national and historical sites across the United States, immersing himself in the rich heritage of the country he taught about with such enthusiasm. A lifelong and passionate fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers, John embodied the team’s colors, remaining “True black and gold to the core” through every season.
John was an active and valued member of his community. He proudly belonged to the Newtown Square Presbyterian Church, where he found spiritual fulfillment and fellowship. His affiliations also included the PSEA (Pennsylvania State Education Association) Retired, and the DHMS Breakfast Club, highlighting his continued connections with colleagues and friends in retirement.
In his final years, John faced the challenges of ALS with remarkable courage and grace. His family expresses their deepest gratitude to the treasured friends who provided unwavering support during this difficult journey. Special thanks are extended to the dedicated nurses and caregivers, Theresa Haynes, Kim Carroll, Belinda Ervin, and Peggy Harris, whose compassionate care lifted John’s spirits and provided invaluable assistance. The family also acknowledges the exceptional support and love received from ALS of Greater Philadelphia and Play for the A’s, organizations that offered comfort and reassurance that they were never alone in this fight.

The family finds solace in the words of 2 Corinthians 4:16-18: “Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.”
Relatives and friends are invited to celebrate John’s life at his funeral service on Wednesday, September 8th at 11:00 AM at the Newtown Square Presbyterian Church, 3600 Goshen Rd., Newtown Square, PA 19073.
