John Commerford Farrell, a beloved figure in Essex Fells, New Jersey, passed away peacefully on October 12, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. His departure marks the end of an era for many who knew him, but his legacy of service, dedication, and unwavering love for his family and community will endure. John Farrell was more than just a resident of Essex Fells; he was an integral part of its fabric, leaving an indelible mark on the lives he touched.

Born on April 18, 1949, John was a proud second-generation Irish American who embodied the values of hard work, community spirit, and deep family ties. He married his beloved wife Kate in 1976, and together they built a large and loving family, raising six children: Jack, Mary Kate, Marguerite, Liam, Breada, and Patrick. To his six grandchildren – Eileen, Liam, Maggie, Fin, Annie, and Kit – he was affectionately known as “Pops,” a testament to his role as the family patriarch. His influence extended to his sons-in-law and daughters-in-law, Cristen Farrell, Brandon Gonzales, Brian Solski, and Christian Jewett, who became cherished members of the Farrell family.

A Life Dedicated to Education and Community

John Farrell’s commitment to service was evident throughout his life, starting with his 40-year career as a physical education teacher at Garfield Elementary School in Kearny, NJ. Generations of students benefited from his passion for education and his caring approach. He was not just a teacher; he was a mentor and a positive influence in the lives of countless children, fostering a love for physical activity and instilling valuable life lessons. His dedication to his students and the school community earned him the respect and affection of both faculty and pupils alike.

Beyond the classroom, John Farrell was deeply involved in the Essex Fells community. His love for music found expression in his talent as a bagpiper with the South Park and District Pipe & Drum Band. He generously shared his musical gift, performing at countless events, both joyous and somber, throughout his town. Whether it was a wedding celebration or a solemn memorial, John’s bagpipes provided a poignant and memorable soundtrack to community life.

John’s passion for sports extended beyond his profession. He was an accomplished athlete himself, having completed three marathons, including two New York City Marathons, and participated in triathlons. He channeled this passion into coaching, dedicating his time to Kearny High School’s track team and various youth sports teams in his community, including those of his own children and grandchildren. In his later years, a different kind of sport captured his attention: fishing with his grandchildren, creating cherished memories by the water.

In a testament to his lifelong commitment to community safety and well-being, John Farrell served as a volunteer fireman in Essex Fells for over 37 years. He bravely answered the call to duty time and time again, driving the fire rigs and facing danger without seeking recognition. His selfless service as a fireman exemplifies his character: always ready to help others in need, embodying the spirit of a true community hero. Even in his later years, John continued to serve his community as a beloved crossing guard, ensuring the safety of children on their way to school.

A Man of Faith and Family

Underpinning all of John Farrell’s endeavors was his unwavering Catholic faith. It was a source of solace, strength, and guidance throughout his life, informing his values and inspiring his service to others. His faith was not just a personal conviction; it was actively lived through his actions and his dedication to helping those around him.

Above all else, John Farrell was a devoted family man. His family was the cornerstone of his life, and he cherished every moment spent with them. He led by example, demonstrating the importance of family, friendship, and community through his “deeds, not words.” To be John’s friend was to have a friend for life – a testament to his loyalty and the genuine connections he forged with people.
