Remembering John Mullaney: A Legacy in Boston Broadcasting

John K. “Jack” Mullaney, a long-time resident of Concord, Massachusetts, passed away at the age of 95 on October 25, 2018. His career in Boston television spanned decades, leaving a lasting impact on the industry. Mullaney’s contributions, particularly during his time as Television Research Director at Fox25, helped shape the media landscape of the city.

Mullaney’s professional journey in broadcasting was extensive. Prior to his notable role at Fox25, from which he retired in 1991, he held significant positions at WNEV, WBZ-TV, and WNAC-TV, as well as WEEI Radio. His deep understanding of audience research and media trends made him a respected figure in the Boston media market. His work behind the scenes was crucial in guiding programming and content strategies for these major stations.

Beyond his broadcasting career, John Mullaney’s life was marked by service and a passion for learning. A World War II veteran, he served in both the European and Pacific Theaters with the U.S. Army, demonstrating his commitment to his country during a critical period in history. His pursuit of knowledge led him to Boston University School of Communications, where he earned his degree, following studies at Worcester Polytechnic Institute before the war. Later in his career, Mullaney shared his expertise by teaching broadcasting classes at both Boston University and Northeastern University, mentoring the next generation of media professionals.

John Mullaney’s interests extended beyond his professional life. He was a passionate drummer and a devoted jazz enthusiast. In his younger years, he had the opportunity to witness performances by many jazz pioneers, reflecting his deep appreciation for music and culture. His love for speed and engineering also manifested in his interest in auto racing, and he enjoyed traveling with his family to Formula 1 and SCCA events. He even briefly engaged in local auto club activities, showcasing his adventurous spirit.

Born and raised in Gardner, Massachusetts, a city he always held dear, Mullaney built his family life in West Concord. He was a devoted husband to his late wife, Ruth A. Quigley, and a loving father to Matthew and Anne Mullaney of Concord, and John of Newton. He was also a proud grandfather to Sydney and Kendall Mullaney. John Mullaney was predeceased by his brother, Sister Jean Mullaney of New York, and was the son of the late Francis (Kevlin) and John J. Mullaney.

John Mullaney’s life will be honored and remembered by family and friends at a gathering on Wednesday, November 7, 2018, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Concord Funeral Home, 74 Belknap St., Concord. Interment will be private. His contributions to broadcasting, his service to his country, and his devotion to his family leave behind a meaningful legacy.
