John Paul Lavoisier: From “The Blob” Town to Soap Opera Star

John Paul Lavoisier carved a unique path from his upbringing in the filming location of the classic sci-fi horror “The Blob” to becoming a recognized face in television. Even in his early years, Lavoisier was drawn to performance, captivating audiences with magic tricks and drumming. Weekends would find him entertaining children at birthday parties with his rabbit companion, while evenings echoed with his drum rhythms in local coffee shops and venues. Driven by a passion for music, particularly inspired by Rush, he pursued jazz performance at The University of the Arts in Philadelphia after high school.

During his studies in Philadelphia, Lavoisier’s artistic interests broadened to film, setting his sights on New York City, a mere hundred miles away, and the acting opportunities it held. He quickly immersed himself in the vibrant NYC acting scene, securing roles in student films, print advertisements, and Off-Broadway productions. He even graced a romance novel cover, all while supporting himself as a waiter at the iconic Russian Tea Room. After a year in Astoria, Queens, a pivotal moment arrived: an audition for ABC’s “One Life to Live.” After five persistent auditions, he landed the role of “Rex Balsom.”

For a decade, John Paul Lavoisier embodied Rex Balsom, becoming a central figure on “One Life to Live” until its cancellation in 2011. Since 2012, Los Angeles has been his home. There, he enjoys reading, maintaining an active lifestyle through exercise and golf, and hosting friendly poker games. Whether running through Beverly Hills or nurturing friendships, John Paul Lavoisier continues to embrace life with the same energy and passion that propelled him from a small town performer to a television star.
