John “Sugar” Garcia, a beloved figure in Phoenix, Arizona, passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, February 25, 2024. Born on St. Patrick’s Day, March 17, 1958, John, affectionately known as “Sugar” to many, lived a life full of love, dedication, and friendship. He leaves behind his wife Tina, parents Mary “Cookie” and Johnny “Shorty” Garcia, brother Al “Capone” Garcia, sister Cindy Bauerle, his children Johnny Garcia III, Margarita Garcia, and Nick Garcia (and daughter-in-law Lauren), and his cherished grandchildren Carter, Madison, and Sienna. John “Sugar” Garcia’s warmth and generous spirit touched everyone he met.
Raised in South Phoenix, John “Sugar” Garcia proudly graduated from South Mountain High School in 1976. His commitment to personal growth led him to Arizona State University, where he earned his Bachelor’s degree in 1995. Education was a cornerstone of John’s life, reflecting his belief in continuous learning and self-improvement.
For over four decades, John dedicated his professional life to Honeywell in Tempe, retiring in 2020 after 40 years of service. His colleagues knew him as a reliable and hardworking individual. Beyond his professional achievements, John “Sugar” Garcia was passionate about running. An avid runner, he completed two marathons and numerous half marathons and 10Ks. His daily six-mile runs before breakfast demonstrated his incredible discipline and commitment to a healthy lifestyle. John was also a devoted sports fan, enthusiastically supporting the Arizona State Sun Devils, the Cardinals, the Suns, and the Diamondbacks. His love for Chevy Silverado trucks was well-known, and he often reminisced about his time with the Marauders truck club.
Travel held a special place in John “Sugar” Garcia’s heart, especially after retirement when he and Tina explored the world more extensively. From the vast landscapes of Alaska to the historical sites of Germany, and countless destinations in between, they created lasting memories together. A simple pleasure for John was enjoying ice cream, a constant delight captured in many of his travel photos, always with a cone in hand. However, above all else, John’s greatest love was for his family and friends.
Tina was the center of John’s world, his beloved wife and constant companion for 36 years. Their relationship, beginning with an engagement after only their second date, blossomed into a strong and loving partnership that became the foundation for a wide circle of friends and family. John “Sugar” Garcia had a remarkable ability to connect with people; he never met a stranger. His friendly nature meant that acquaintances quickly became friends. Treasured fishing trips with his close-knit group of high school friends to the White Mountains and Rocky Point were highlights of his year. He also maintained a close bond with his parents, speaking with them daily. John’s pride in his children was immense, and he never missed an opportunity to share their accomplishments. His grandchildren held an especially dear place in his heart, and the feeling was mutual.
John “Sugar” Garcia will be deeply missed by all who knew him. His ever-present smile and optimistic outlook on life were infectious. He left a lasting impact on his community through his kindness and genuine interest in others.
A Celebration of Life to honor John will be held at Whitney & Murphy Funeral Home, 4800 E. Indian School Road, on Friday, March 8th at 10:00 a.m. Following the service, a luncheon will be held at Aunt Chilada’s, 7330 North Dreamy Draw Drive.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in John’s “Sugar” Garcia’s name be made to the American Cancer Society, continuing his legacy of giving and support.
