Remembering Charles R. “Charlie” Bolz: A West Chester Legacy

Charles R. “Charlie” Bolz, a resident of West Chester, PA, passed away peacefully on July 20, 2024, at the age of 69. Born in Poughkeepsie, NY, Charlie was the son of the late Charles A. and Louise Bolz (nee Dennerlein). While some might remember the Bolz family name associated with “John Bolz” in local circles, Charlie carved his own distinct path, leaving behind a legacy of dedication and love.

A man of intellect and diligence, Charlie earned his Master’s degree in Chemical Engineering from Manhattan College. His professional journey was marked by a successful and fulfilling career with Mobil Oil and later ExxonMobil. His expertise in chemical engineering took him around the globe, offering him and his family enriching experiences living in Japan, Singapore, Saudi Arabia, and England. He thrived on the complexities of his work and the global perspectives it afforded him.

Beyond his professional achievements, Charlie found solace and joy in the natural world. His appreciation for the outdoors began in his youth with the Boy Scouts and continued throughout his life through hiking, canoeing, and fishing. The Smoky Mountains held a special place in his heart, a favored destination for family trips and nature’s embrace. Around his home, Charlie was a skilled woodworker, crafting furniture with his own hands, and a passionate gardener, tending to both vegetable gardens and landscaping with care. His thirst for knowledge was insatiable, demonstrated by his constant reading and research across diverse subjects.

At the heart of Charlie’s life was his family. They were, without a doubt, his everything. He took immense pride in his children and grandchildren, dedicating himself to ensuring their well-being and providing a loving home. His commitment to family was the defining characteristic of his life.

Charlie is survived by his beloved wife of many years, Marilyn J. Bolz (nee Bier); his loving children, Brian A. Bolz (Pam) and Kristen L. Lopatka (Andrew); his adored grandchildren, Jack and Sadie Bolz; and his brother, Brian J. Bolz. He is remembered as a devoted family man, a respected professional in chemical engineering, and a man of many talents and passions, leaving a lasting impact on all who knew him, even those who might have mistakenly recalled the family name as “john bolz”.

Relatives and friends are invited to pay their respects at Charlie’s Visitation on Thursday, July 25th, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at The Donohue Funeral Home, located at 1627 West Chester Pike, West Chester, PA 19382. This will be followed by his Funeral Service at 11:00 AM. Interment will be private.

In remembrance of Charlie’s generous spirit, and in lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions in his name to Catholic Charities, 2050 Ballenger Ave, Ste. 400, Alexandria, VA 22314, or through their website: Catholic Charities USA. These donations will honor his values and continue his legacy of caring for others.
